McLaren Intends to Avoid SUV Market, Unlike Competition

One Supercar Brand Says “No” to SUVs

In recent years, supercar brands such as Ferrari and Lamborghini have decided to venture into the SUV market. This has been a surprise for many, unlike when Bentley or Rolls-Royce jumped ship. Regardless, even Aston Martin and Lotus are planning SUV models for the market. But, one major supercar company is saying no. McLaren intends to avoid the SUV market, unlike the competition. So, there will be no McLaren SUV arriving in the future. Honestly, avoiding the SUV market is a reasonable option, especially with the pure competition going on between the other companies now.

Recently, McLaren’s CEO Mike Flewitt spoke with Automotive News about this exact topic. From the conversation, a McLaren SUV seems completely off the table.

”I’m not against SUVs… They are just not what McLaren does.” – Statement by McLaren CEO Mike Flewitt

This statement makes it clear that McLaren does not vision itself as a SUV company. Within reasonable observance, this statement is true. McLaren succeeds largely at creating vehicles in the supercar realm. Hence, staying within that will allow McLaren to spend more resources on what matters, the newest models to its fleet.

”When we decide to do a product there are three simple tests: It has to be right for the brand and right for the customer base, we’ve got to have the technology to do the best car in class, and we’ve got to make money… An SUV starts to reduce the purity of the brand as a supercar driver’s brand. Secondly, we don’t have the technology. Can you imagine from a standing start if we wanted to go out and do a better car than a Range Rover, or a Cayenne – the billions we’d have to invest? Third, therefore, is we wouldn’t make any money. So, it doesn’t tick any box.” – Statement by McLaren CEO Mike Flewitt

Obviously, from these remarks, CEO Mike Flewitt doesn’t see a McLaren SUV as a reasonable investment. Firstly, the car is not right for their brand or clientele. Secondly, McLaren feels it will degrade their supercar basis. Thirdly, McLaren doesn’t have or want the technology needed to build a SUV from scratch. Avoiding billions in investment isn’t a bad thing, as this will allow McLaren to invest otherwise. Regardless, there will be plenty of other supercar or ultra-luxury SUVs to choose from.

But… What About Electric Vehicles?

Unlike never owning a McLaren SUV, it will be possible to own a McLaren EV in the future. Not surprisingly, McLaren CEO Mike Flewitt is for EVs. But, McLaren will need a lot of preparation work in the battery creation realm.

”A McLaren EV has got to be usable… It shouldn’t be that we offer a powertrain solution that compromises. It won’t just be lower emissions, it’ll be a better sports car. We’ve set ourselves half an hour full-on track use. You need to be able to do that without recharge, and when you come in and recharge it needs to recharge in 30 minutes.” – Statement by McLaren CEO Mike Flewitt

McLaren aims to bring an EV to market, but first, it must be reliable on the track. Not only will they offer lower emissions but aim to build a better car. The goal is to allow a driver 30 minutes of track intensive driving before having to charge for 30 minutes. So, downtime may be a bit longer than simply filling a tank, but electrical wise, this is a very high expectation. Building a battery like this will take high investment, research and development, and more. It most likely will not happen, but companies such as Tesla seem to have a hold on this, so maybe reaching out for some co-operative work isn’t a bad idea… or maybe it is?

Overall, the decision to avoid a McLaren SUV is reasonable, without a doubt. On the other hand, entering the EV market is a must. An EV will allow McLaren to retain full supercar status while offering a modern take on technology. By avoiding an SUV, McLaren saves billions in investment funding as well as headaches. First generation SUVs tend to arrive with problems, such as the Cayenne 10 years ago. Regardless of this decision, plenty of SUV options will be readily available by Aston Martin, Ferrari, Lamborghini, and even Lotus. In conclusion, McLaren’s decision to avoid SUVs wasn’t really a surprise anyway.

Starting with a slightly faster 0-60 time and more power, this car takes the Cayman a bit more forward. Furthermore, the multitude of additional packages easily makes up for the price difference. Who doesn’t want all of the features discussed above? Well…maybe somebody… but not most! Overall, the GTS models are well worth the money if financials allow for the upgrade.

The Porsche Cayman GT4 Clubsport is a car truly built for the track. First, and foremost, this car is not street legal. This is due to the heavy emphasis on race track specs. Sticking to tradition, this car runs a RWD system with a flat six engine. From there, the list only extends down to the floor with amazing race tech. To not surprise, this car wears components of the Cayman GT4 as well as the 911 GT3 Cup. Lastly, and recently, the Cayman GT4 Clubsport was used by Porsche for a one-make challenge at Pikes Peak. A Production Reign from 1975 to 1985

From 1975 to 1985, the Ferrari 308 GTB was assembled in Maranello, Italy. This beautiful car’s initial design is by Leonardo Fioravanti at Pininfarina. The name “GTB” basically stands for “Gran Touring Berlinetta”. On the other hand, the 308 GTS is a Targa top, but that will be left for another future article. The Ferrari 308 GTB is a transverse mid-engine RWD sports car. The predecessor of the 308 GTB is the Dino 246 GT/GTS. Furthermore, the successor is the 328 GTB/GTS.

Initially, the 308 GTB made its intro at the Paris Motor Show in 1975. As per the GTS, this debut occurs 2 years later at the 1977 Frankfurt Motor Show. The major difference of these two models is the top design. The GTB has a hard-top whereas the GTS has the Targa top. Performance wise, both cars perform very similar. The only performance difference is mostly due to weight.

The 1975-1985 Ferrari 308 GTB sports a 2.9-liter Tipo F106 AB V8 engine. First off, the European version contains 252 horsepower due to a dry sump setup. Unfortunately, the U.S. version tapers back to 237 horsepower. This is due to a wet sump because of emission control requirements. Furthermore, the motor is a 90 degrees V8 with a belt-driven twin overhead camshaft per cylinder bank. Even furthermore, the car has four twin-choke Weber 40DCNF carbs with a single coil ignition. On top of this, the engine works in combo with a fully synchromesh 5-speed “dog-leg” manual transmission. Lastly, this system receives support from a limited slip differential.

Racing Components of the 308 GTB

The 1975-1985 Ferrari 308 GTB is a classic racing car at heart. Firstly, the car starts with the beastly 2.9-liter V8. Secondly, the car is built from a tube frame and glass-enforced separate plastic body. But, in June 1977, the body changed to steel. Before the steel, the car weight was 2315 lbs. Afterwards, the steel added an increase of around 331 lbs. Thirdly, the driver takes full control with unassisted rack and pinion steering.

Fourthly, the 308 GTB has an all independent suspension. This system contains double wishbones, coaxial coil springs, hydraulic dampers, and anti-roll bars. Fifthly, and finally, is the 4-wheel vented disc brakes. From the engine to suspension, this car could compete with the crème of the crop at the time. Unfortunately, nowadays, parts for this car are rare, and sometimes even manufactured new due to lack of replacement parts.

Overall, the 1975-1985 Ferrari 308 GTB is an amazing machine. From the beautiful styling to the V8, this car was sure to please the auto enthusiast at the time. Furthermore, this car still pleases many fans today. Today, the 1975-1985 308 GTB ranges in price from as low at $50,000 up to over $200,000. This may not equate to the value of some other Ferraris, which cost millions, but this car is well worth this price. Down the road, this car may increase in value as it is truly a stunning machine. During the 1960 London Motor Show, Aston Martin introduced the DB4 GT Zagato. The 1961 Aston Martin DB4 GT Zagato is a grand tourer (GT) coupe. Basically, the car begins as a DB4 GT. But, it receives alterations by the Zagato Factory in Italy, making it ever so greater. Thanks to Ercole Spada, this car became slightly smaller and more lightweight. At Goodwood in 1961 during Eastertime, the 1961 Aston Martin DB4 GT Zagato raced in its first outing. Surprisingly, the car was able to accomplish 3rd place while being driven by Stirling Moss. Recently, McLaren Special Operations released two themes: Pacific & Track. Previously this year, the Atlantic theme had its debut. There is also the Velocity Theme as seen at the 2017 Geneva Motor Show, being the 1st MSO theme for the 720S. The color schemes by McLaren Special Operations (MSO) cater to enthusiasts with a bit more interest in style. The Pacific theme is a mix of blue hues representing an ocean whereas the Track theme is a mix of white and orange. Each of these color sets are special editions which will most likely have a production limit. Either way, both combos are stunning on the awe-inspiring McLaren 720S.

The McLaren 720S Pacific theme begins with blue hues representing the Pacific Ocean. The exterior begins with Cerulean Blue paint. Next, the accents on the car are a darker hue of Estoril Blue. This can be seen on the door intake region. Furthermore, all of the 720S carbon fiber is a Cobalt Blue tone. This includes carbon on the air intakes, front splitter, mirror casings, rear bumper, rear deck, rear diffuser, and roof. Lastly, blue reaches the interior by displaying on the seats and steering wheel. If the tones of the Pacific ocean are of interest, then this car is perfect.

Next, the McLaren 720S Track theme will be the focus. The first Track theme 720S was commissioned by McLaren Manchester. This car begins with an Anniversary White paint job inspired by the 1980s McLaren F1 theme. Next, black and orange accents extend to the doors, rear, hood, and wheels. For the wheels, there are black rims with an orange outer lip. Furthermore, the mirror caps are in a “speedy kiwi” design. Lastly on the exterior, the carbon fiber has a satin finish to save weight. On the interior, black Alcantara upholstery withholds orange contrast stitching. Finally, the lightweight titanium harness bar allows a 6-point harness.

Finally, Porsche has released specs for the all-new Taycan EV vehicle, previously the Mission E. The Porsche Taycan EV specs are quite impressive. But, first the pronunciation of the name needs to be made clear. Porsche pronounces “Taycan” as “TIE-con”. Yes, it sounds like you are going to a comic con knock-off for ties. The Porsche Taycan EV specs are not exact but are simply expected ballpark numbers. The Porsche Taycan EV sports two permanently excited synchronous motors. These electric motors produce over 600 horsepower. This allows the Taycan to hit 60 mph in under 3.5 seconds with AWD. Furthermore, 124 mph will take around 12 seconds… phew! Lastly, the Taycan will contain a 800 volt battery. This battery will allow the Taycan to complete trips of over 300 miles per charge. Furthermore, a specific charger type will charge for 250 miles in as little as 15 minutes.

With 300 miles per full charge, the Taycan will be capable of completing long distance road trips. But, many people worry about charging stations. Availability was a debate of the past, but not for long. BMW, Daimler, Ford, Porsche, & VW intend to build 400 fast-charging locations by 2020. The goal of this is to ensure charging stations are every 100 miles or so, at least in Europe. Regardless, this will heavily resolve many worries about charging EVs. With this leap in tech, EVs will be able to become a much worthier competitor. In conclusion, the Porsche Taycan EV specs are impressive and it is expected to have production info later in 2018.

For the 2020 model year, Aston Martin plans to bring a 4-door crossover SUV to the market, the DBX. The 2020 Aston Martin DBX will be Aston’s attempt to join the luxury SUV market. Recently, many luxury brands have built their own style of SUVs. This includes manufacturers such as Aston Martin, Lamborghini, and even Rolls-Royce. With this vehicle, Aston hopes to increase its sales above 4,000 globally per year. But, this will heavily depend on the market reaction upon an official debut. By impressing everyone, Aston may be able to stand out in the luxury SUV market.

Features & Specifications

Initially, the Aston Martin DBX was on display as a 2-door concept at the 2015 Geneva Motor Show. From exterior to interior, this car should please most auto enthusiasts. Firstly, there will be a reworked component set of the DB11 coupe, mostly of aluminum. Secondly, the production version in 2020 should feature a Mercedes V8 engine. But, Aston does intend to release a fully electric SUV within a few years later. Thirdly, as per production, this vehicle is on track to be built in Wales. Unfortunately, for 2-door SUV enthusiasts, Aston doesn’t plan to build an AMC Spirit.

Aston Martin does not want to embarrass itself with another failure such as the Lagonda SUV (not saloon). The Aston Martin Lagonda SUV was on display at the 2009 Geneva Motor Show. As per the 2020 Aston Martin DBX, this vehicle will have decent competition. These vehicles include the Bentley Bentayga, Lamborghini Urus, Rolls-Royce Cullinan, and the Tesla Model X. As per price point, the DBX is expected to cost around $225,000. This is decently more than the Model X but definitely cheaper than a Cullinan. In conclusion, time will only tell if the DBX will be successful… or not.

In 2018, BMW promises to debut an “emotional” vehicle at Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance. Thus, many people are pointing towards the official Z4 model release. In August 2017, BMW brought the Z4 Roadster Concept to the Pebble Beach Concours show. On top of the possible Z4 debut, BMW will also display the new 8-Series. Both cars are part of the new line-up that will hit markets for the 2019 model year. But, there is also no guarantee which car BMW will debut at the show.

For the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance 2018, there is speculation of a Z4 debut. If this is the case, it will most likely be a 2019 BMW Z4 due to the August timing. The BMW Z4 Roadster Concept officially debuted at Monterey Car Week last year. The expectations are that the Z4 will be offered in an inline-4 and inline-6 engine. The inline-4 starts around 180 horsepower and 200 lb.-ft. of torque. As per the inline-6, it should sport around 320 horsepower and 340 lb.-ft. of torque. At a price of $50,000 to $60,000, this car will be an impressive, affordable car. Although, in the end, the Z4 does relate closely to the new Toyota Supra. That car won’t hit market until next year.

The Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance is a high-end luxury show at the world-famous Pebble Beach Golf Course. The event is held at the lodge with its prestigious location and rating. Each year, manufacturers bring new cars to display while spectators bring their finest collectible vehicles. General Admission Tickets start at a whopping $325 prior to August 1, and $375 beginning August 1. From there, prices only increase with the next level equating to $825 per ticket. Obviously, this event caters to the wealthy as the base tickets cost more than a Beyoncé concert.

Overall, BMW expects to ‘wow’ the Pebble Beach spectators this year. While the 8-Series will be on display at the show, many still wonder what BMW will also bring to the table.
