In September 2017, a duel between Daimler AG and Elon Musk occurred on Twitter. Daimler, the owner of Mercedes-Benz, was called out by Elon Musk about electric car investments. The entire dispute began when Musk posted a story from USA Today. This story discussed Mercedes-Benz $1 billion investment into the electric cars market. This led to Elon Musk stating that Mercedes-Benz should’ve invested more into the market, a recommendation of $10 billion dollars.

Elon  Calls Out Daimler on Twitter

On September 24, 2017, Elon Musk tweeted out “That’s not a lot of money for a giant like Daimler/Mercedes. Wish they’d do more. Off by a zero.” This post, by such a well-known person, immediately caught the eyes of Daimler AG. They responded the next day, on the 25th of September, with a firing back statement.

In this tweet, Daimler calls out Elon Musk stating that they are investing over $10 billion into the next-generation EVs as well as $1 billion into battery production. Besides the poor quality of grammar in the response, this is seen as Daimler “shooting back” at Tesla’s Elon Musk. After this response, Elon Musk responded with an extremely simple tweet “Good”. In response to another tweet at Daimler, they responded “I am sorry but we’ve announced this investment back in 2016”.

Daimler Addresses Other Tweets with More Backing Information

Another statement by Daimler in response to another tweet is as follows: “the smart was the first #EV in mass-production since 2007. We are working on Evs for over 100 years and we believe in it’s potential”. Although the Smart is the first EV, it is definitely not a top choice for many car enthusiasts. Honestly, it is surprising that Smart still exists today. Regardless, Daimler seems confident about their investment into EV and makes a substantial claim of working with it for over 100 years. Whether or not that is a stretch, Daimler will be pushing forward into the EV market with Mercedes-Benz over the next few years.

   The True Battle of the EVs is Yet to Come

Overall, the Twitter war between Daimler and Elon Musk wasn’t really a true battle. It was simply the fact that Elon wasn’t properly informed of these investments and Daimler aimed to clear it up. This minor dispute led to a spill out of over reacting by the community. Elon was most likely happy to hear that Daimler was investing more into the EV market. In the end, people may say Daimler won this dispute but the true battle of the EVs will occur over the next 5-10 years.

Recently, in the auto news industry, rumors are spreading about the successor of the Agera. The name is believed to be from a “reliable source close to Koenigsegg”, according to The Supercar Blog. This name is the Koenigsegg Ragnarok. Unrelating, this may strike a reminder to the Thor: Ragnarok film that hit theatres in 2017 with slightly over $850 million in worldwide revenue. Just a quick reminder, this is the film where Chris Hemsworth plays Thor in protecting against the destruction of the gods and world. Furthermore, the word “Ragnarok” translates to “the Doom of the Gods” in old Norse. During this event, the mythical cycle ends, and the cosmos is destroyed, then recreation takes place. So, with a name like this, the Koenigsegg Ragnarok should rattle the hypercar realm.

An Expectation of Performance Figures

Under the hood, the Koenigsegg Ragnarok will most likely sport the twin-turbo V8 seen in the Agera RS, but even better. The horsepower range will be around 1,400, at least 40 over the Agera RS that could reach almost 278 mph at top speed. Now, prepare yourself to be taken back by the expected performance. Koenigsegg wants the Ragnarok to reach 250 mph in only 14 seconds, leaving rubber the entire way behind. With the combination of a V8, 23 psi boost from the turbo, and a ratio of 8.8:1 instead of 9.5:1, this car could feed 32 psi for an instant 600 horsepower boost. Phew! That’s one hell of a performance. Honestly, hopefully it will happen as it is true insanity for a production vehicle of any type. With this car, Koenigsegg hopes to hold back the Tesla Roadster’s advantages.

Recently, Christian von Koenigsegg, the CEO and founder of Koenigsegg, spoke to Top Gear about the Tesla Roadster. Initially, Koenigsegg didn’t truly believe the performance expectations for the Tesla. But, unfortunately, Elon Musk wasn’t lying when we spoke of the insane acceleration in the Roadster. Now, the Koenigsegg Ragnarok will most likely be Koenigsegg’s attempt to strike back.

“We wondered whether it was possible, and yeah, it’s possible. Then we thought, ‘okay how do we deal with it? This is embarrassing.’ In two days we’d thought of a few things. The simplest way of putting it is like this: it’s combining direct drive with the hybridization we have in a different format with Freevalve engine technology, in a peculiar layout.” – Christian von Koenigsegg, Founder & CEO of Koenigsegg (During Interview with Top Gear)

After refocusing energy from the already planned future, to a new future, Koenigsegg believes to have found a way to do it. Koenigsegg plans to use a combustion engine, versus an electric setup, to compete with the Roadster. This doesn’t make it direct competition, but it is close enough being in the same hypercar class. Their goal is to use direct drive with hybridization. Next, it’ll include Freevalve engine tech in a specific layout. Not being extremely detailed, Koenigsegg teased at this during the interview as seen above. Now, it is somewhat an expectation that the Koenigsegg Ragnarok will be the new frontier.

According to Christian von Koenigsegg, the company is “just scratching the surface”. With the Koenigsegg Ragnarok, the auto industry will rattle from the wrath of power. Although nothing is truly known, the car will display at the 2019 Geneva Motor Show in March of 2019. At this show, the world will see the future of the hypercar realm. If the power figures are true, this is an Earth car fit for Thor, maybe somewhat of what he’d expect in Asgard. In conclusion, the Koenigsegg Ragnarok’s name may, or may not, be correct, but the car will be a beast.

The Mercedes-Benz G-Class has been an extravagant, iconic SUV since its debut in 1979. Initially starting with I4, I5, and I6 motors, the car has grown to become a rare spectacle. Currently, the G65 AMG sports a V12 motor that turns this SUV into a true beast. Unfortunately, Daimler AG, the owner of Mercedes-Benz, has decided it is time to let go of the prized V12 option. So, unfortunately, Daimler is releasing a final version called the Mercedes-AMG G65 Final Edition.

MSRP of $252,690 with 65 Limited Editions Worldwide

While the non-AMG G-Class starts at a MSRP of $122,400, the Final Edition is expected to cost around $252,690. Yes, 2 times as much as the base model. This price is not 100% official in the United States yet, but sources state the value was obtained from Mercedes-Benz. Limited to only 65 worldwide, the G65 AMG will have 30 for sale within the U.S. very soon. Obtaining one of these limited SUVs will be difficult and may be reserved for Mercedes top customers.

Symbolic Matte Bronze Trim

The Mercedes-AMG G65 Final Edition’s attractiveness begins with a matte bronze trim on the exterior. The matte bronze trim can be seen on the front bumper, mirrors, and wheels. On the inside, black Nappa leather is accented by carbon fiber with interwoven bronze accents. Even the passenger handle has a specialty badge for those “oh shit” moments. At least, your passenger can hold on for dear life in style when you accelerate this beastly SUV.

6.0-Liter Twin-Turbo V12 with 630 HP and 730 Lb.-Ft. of Torque

In the engine bay, a twin-turbo 6.0-liter V12 boasts an obnoxious 630 horsepower and 738 lb.-ft. of torque. This allows the SUV to hit 60 mph in only 5.3 seconds. Mercedes-AMG limits the SUV to a top governed speed of 143 mph, faster than anyone needs to go in a SUV. Considering the G65 has the same engine as a S65, the true top speed can be expected to be around 170-180 mph. Now it only makes sense that they limited it… going that fast in a SUV would probably prove deadly, very fast.

The End of the Gelandewagen Era

Overall, the Mercedes-AMG G65 Final Edition is a farewell to the G-Class and it’s V12 engine. Mercedes plan is to replace the G-Class with an all-new, similar vehicle with smaller engine options. Don’t worry, smaller engines don’t signal the loss of enormous power as many manufacturers have proven in the last few years. Regardless, the G65 Final Edition is a mean machine that can go through 2 feet of standing water and climb 27 degree slopes. On top of that, the G65 can tilt 20 degrees sideways before it may tilt over. In the end, the G-Class was an iconic symbol of wealth through the years and it’s lifetime has come to a demise.

From January 2010 to January 2014, Daimler AG produced the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG 2-door coupe. The base version of this car ranges in model year from 2011 to 2015. The newest study by German economics professor, Ferdinand Dudenhoeffer, shows us that there is very little correlation between large production numbers and profitability in the automotive markets. Basically, it completely depends on the brands business strategy. But, one manufacturer stands out from the rest… Ferrari.

Dudenhoeffer’s study for, the Center for Automotive Research (CAR), reveals that the most profitable brand at the moment is Ferrari. For the first six months of the year, the Italian supercar company reported an operating profit of  €69,000. That’s approximately $80,000, for every new car sold.

If you take into account other revenue streams like accessories, then the profit per car rises to a staggering $90,000. For a company that only produces about 7,000 vehicles per year, they have proven that brand identity has a lot to do with profitability in the automotive industry.

So, just how impressive is that $80,000 figure?

  • Jaguar nets approximately $927 per car.
  • Daimler AG gets about $5,000 in profit for each of their vehicles.
  • Maserati comes in at $5800.
  • Porsche collects $17,250 per vehicle, making it one of the highest of the European brands.

As you can see, Ferrari makes more than quadruple what the others do.

Even though Ferrari outstrips their competition, Porsche is nearly twice as profitable as their rivals Mercedes-Benz, BMW, or Audi. Both Maserati and Volvo are also about half as profitable as Porsche and twelve times less than Ferrari.

The Ferrari brand has built its success on exclusivity and luxury. If they mass-produced their cars, they would not have a balance between demand and supply and they could not command their higher prices. Conversely, if Volvo doubled their prices to increase profitability, they would see a decrease in sales because their markets would not support the move.

In the end, profitability per car is interesting and in the case of Ferrari, just a bit mind-boggling. However, this manufacturer sells about 7000 cars per year for a rough estimate of $560 million dollars and Porsche sells somewhere around 245,000 cars for about $4.2 billion dollars. In the end, it’s all about the bottom line.

Nowadays, automobiles are a part of daily life every day for many people worldwide. This can lead a person to wonder, who invented the first automobile? Well, there is no true straightforward answer. According to the Library of Congress, Karl (Carl) Benz is the inventor of the automobile. The history of building automobiles dates back to Leonardo da Vinci’s designs in the 15th century. On top of this, there are many different types of auto designs including electric, gas, and steam engines. Furthermore, there are numerous styles that differentiate vehicle types.

From 1769 to 1839, the debate of who invented the first automobile begins. Starting with Nicholas-Joseph Cugnot from France. In 1769, Cugnot built the first steam self-propelled road vehicle. This was a military tractor for the French army with three wheels and a top speed of 2.5 mph. As it was a self-propelling vehicle, many debate if this was the first official vehicle. Next, from 1832 to 1839, Robert Anderson from Scotland worked on an electric carriage design. This electric carriage was the next tip of the debate, but not much else is available on this setup.

Karl Friedrich Benz is the Library of Congress’ answer to “who invented the first automobile?”. From 1885-1886, Benz built the first “true” automobile. This vehicle uses gasoline as the power source. Furthermore, the vehicle features an internal combustion engine. This engine has a three wheel and four-cycle setup. The engine and chassis form a single unit. After Benz, there are three further people who some say are responsible for the automobile. So, Karl Benz is the Library of Congress’ answer to “who invented the first automobile?”, but others may digress. In 1886, Gottlieb Wilhelm Daimler and Wilhelm Maybach from Germany built the 1st four wheel, four-stroke engine setup. This gasoline vehicle is known as “Cannstatt-Daimler”. Next, there is George Baldwin Seldon in 1876 and 1895 from the United States. Selden’s design is a carriage with a internal combustion engine. This gasoline automobile was never manufactured but has a patent (patent no: 549,160 from 1895). Selden did however collect royalties for this design.

Lastly, there is Charles Edgar Duryea and his brother Frank. Located in the United States, the Duryea brothers design the first successful gas-powered car. This vehicle has a 4 horsepower two-stroke motor. Furthermore, the Duryea brothers also setup the first American car company. So, if someone wonders, “who set up the first American car manufacturing company?”, here’s your answer. Regardless, each of these designers have some type of contribution to the modern-day evolution of cars. For now, let’s skip the debate of who invented the first SUV or sports car.

In 2017, Smart displayed their newest invention at the Frankfurt Motor Show in the form of a musical. Smart is a small vehicle company owned by Daimler AG, the same parent company as Mercedes-Benz. The Smart Vision EQ ForTwo Concept is a self-driving intelligent vehicle that will be the future of “urban luxury”. Powered by a 30 kilowatt lithium-ion battery, the ForTwo will be fully autonomous. The vehicle will not be personally owned but rather an alternative means of transportation.

The ForTwo Will Analyze Passenger Compatability

The Smart Vision EQ ForTwo Concept car will pick up passengers on demand. Similar to Uber Pool and Lyft Line, the ForTwo will allow passengers to “split” expenses. The ForTwo will use advanced technology to analyze passengers Facebook pages for compatibility information. Examples of this include music preferences, Facebook likes, and profile information. The first rider can decline the matching option unlike the second rider. If privacy is a concern, the bench seat turns into a two-part barrier.

The goal of the ForTwo is to have an autonomous, connected, electric, and shareable vehicle. The purpose of this is to reduce emissions, noise pollution, and traffic in the city. “The basic idea is that cars should make use of themselves in the city” said Dieter Zelsche, chairman of Daimler AG’s Board of Management. At level 5 of 5 on the self-driving scale, the ForTwo will pursue the highest automation specs possible. This car fits in the Mercedes-Benz concept to deliver 10 electric vehicles to market by 2020. Although, this vehicle will most likely never make it to the road.

The ForTwo Stores Passenger Preferences

To help passengers identify the vehicle, the headlights can be customized to a specific color for distinguishability. Once the passenger enters the ForTwo, the car will greet the passenger with their profile picture. The ForTwo will also store preferences such as in-car entertainment, places, and routes. When the ForTwo runs low on juice, it will automatically recharge at the closest recharging station. Another unexpected perk is that the ForTwo can connect and feed the grid as a “swarm battery”. Lastly, the side panels of the vehicle can display news, sports scores, time, and weather information while not in motion.

Overall, the Smart Vision EQ ForTwo Concept car is a vision of the future. From its fully autonomous function to its customizability per passenger, it is a leap forward in the automotive realm. Yes! The iconic sports car manufacturer, Aston Martin, plans to go public, and for $24 you can own a piece of their company. Well, unless you live in America, that is.

The news is that the British carmaker plans to begin trading on the London Stock Exchange in October. This would make them the first British automaker to go public.

The principal owners of the company are various private-equity firms in Italy, Kuwait, and Germany. It is some of these firms that are selling off their stakes in the company to the public. Daimler, the German group, is not selling.

Aston Martin is not issuing new stock, nor is it attempting to raise additional capital.

Aston Martin says that 25% of the company shares will go to the public. Estimates put this figure at 56,305,622 to 57,380,3000 shares. Also, based on a statement by company executives last week, the cost to purchase a stake in the company should be around $24.

The Porsche Taycan EV specs are not exact but are simply expected ballpark numbers. The Porsche Taycan EV sports two permanently excited synchronous motors. These electric motors produce over 600 horsepower. This allows the Taycan to hit 60 mph in under 3.5 seconds with AWD. Furthermore, 124 mph will take around 12 seconds… phew! Lastly, the Taycan will contain a 800 volt battery. This battery will allow the Taycan to complete trips of over 300 miles per charge. Furthermore, a specific charger type will charge for 250 miles in as little as 15 minutes.

With 300 miles per full charge, the Taycan will be capable of completing long distance road trips. But, many people worry about charging stations. Availability was a debate of the past, but not for long. BMW, Daimler, Ford, Porsche, & VW intend to build 400 fast-charging locations by 2020. The goal of this is to ensure charging stations are every 100 miles or so, at least in Europe. Regardless, this will heavily resolve many worries about charging EVs. With this leap in tech, EVs will be able to become a much worthier competitor. In conclusion, the Porsche Taycan EV specs are impressive and it is expected to have production info later in 2018.

The 2018 Mercedes-AMG S65 Cabriolet sports a 6.0-liter V12 twin-turbo engine. This motor produces a whopping 620 horsepower and 738 lb.-ft. of torque. These power figures combine with a 7-speed gearbox and rear-wheel drive to create a madhouse on wheels. The V12 allows the S65 to hit 60 mph in only 4.0 seconds with a top speed of 186 mph. The top speed is the same, which again, is due to Mercedes top speed governor regulation. This doesn’t mean that the S65 loses its crown. It simply a question of giving the new V8 a chance or sticking to the Mercedes famed V12.

On the front of the new S65 Cabriolet, there is a revised grill titled the “AMG Panamerica Grille”. This grill shows similarities to the version on the Mercedes-AMG GT. The S65 Cabriolet also has larger front air ducts on the front. On top of that, the front and rear bumpers show some revision work. Lastly, the car has a slightly different chrome trim layout. The S63 Cabriolet has similar alterations to body styling as well.

On the interior, the 2018 Mercedes-AMG S65 Cabriolet has multiple new options. The first is the new leather upholstery color options. Second, is the technology in this beast. Starting with two 12.3” high-resolution displays, the S65 shows modernization. The infotainment system uses the COMAND system by Mercedes. Another new feature is the ability to use hand gesture controls on the steering wheel to control the COMAND system. On a final note, one of the biggest new features is the addition of autonomous features. Unlike Tesla, this car will not offer a ton of autonomous features. But, it does contain two major components of it. First, the Active Distance Assist Distronic will allow the vehicle to slow down and speed up in accordance with the vehicle in front of it. Second, the Active Steering Assist will help the driver stay in the center of a lane. This is a step forward in Daimler’s attempt to add autonomous vehicles to its lineup in the upcoming years.
