In the 1990 Formula 1 season, Ferrari used the 641, also known as the F1-90. This Formula 1 racing car was the main vehicle of the Ferrari racing team for the entirety of the season. The Ferrari 641’s design is by Enrique Scalabroni and Steve Nichols. Furthermore, Steve Nichols was a McLaren designer who helped the project. With 6 wins during the 1990 Formula 1 season, the Ferrari 641 was competitive with McLaren, but at 10 horsepower less. At high speed, the 641 held its ground regardless of the power difference.

The Ferrari 641 sports a Ferrari Tipo 036 3.5-liter mid-engine V12. This motor is capable of 680 base horsepower. Furthermore, the engine works in combo with a 7-speed semi-auto transmission. In San Marino, the 641 withheld the number 037 engine instead. This motor works on Agip fuel, a former Italian auto gasoline. To get the power to the ground, the 641 has Goodyear tires. The Ferrari 641 Formula 1 race car was built with a race worthy chassis and suspension. Firstly, the 641’s chassis comprimes a Kevlar and carbon fiber composite monocoque. Next, the suspension differs slightly in the front and rear. Both the front and the rear contain anti-roll bars, double wishbones, and telescopic shock absorbers. In the front, there is push-rod actuated torsion bar springs. On the other end, in the rear, there is push-rod actuated coil springs. Surprisingly, only one 641 chassis is non existent today due to destruction in testing. Lastly, while two remain in museums, four are privately owned by collectors.

This Ferrari 641 article is basically a throwback to the 1990 Formula 1 Racing season. Although this vehicle was not the best race car on the track, it still won 6 races. One of these vehicles was also in a famous collision at the Japanese Grand Prix with the McLaren race car. The Ferrari 641 and the McLaren battled it out frequently for whom was the best car. Regardless of who was better, both cars deserve respect from car enthusiasts worldwide. Ferrari F50: A Formula 1 Sports Car

The Legendary Ferrari F50

The Ferrari F50 is an equivalent of a F-1 engined road car. From its unique styling to its racing design, the F50 is a collector’s dream. The F50 was produced from 1995 to 1997 by Ferrari with only 349 models built total. As expected, the designer is Pininfarina and it was assembled in Maranello, Italy. To no surprise, the F50 is loaded with Ferrari goodies.

4.7-Liter DOHC V12 (513 Horsepower)

The Ferrari F50 sports a 4.7-liter DOHC V12 producing 513 horsepower and 347 lb.-ft. of torque. The F50 V12 has no trouble redlining at 8,500 rpm with a fuel cut-off at 8,640 rpm. This car also features a Bosch Motronic 2.7 ECU system. The ECU controls fuel feed, ignition timing, and variable length intake and exhaust systems. By variable exhaust and intake, Ferrari means a butterfly valve that is closed at low rpm and open at high rpm.

Although the F50 is a beautiful implementation of engineering, the mileage is lacking, as expected. The F50 gets only 7 mpg in the city and 10 mpg on the highway, defining a true gas guzzler. Usually, these cars don’t rack up miles, so this usually isn’t a concern. As a collector’s car, the F50 is usually displayed in a showroom of sports cars in a private collection. The truth is, how could you possibly not drive this beautiful car?

A True F-1 Sports Car

Overall, the Ferrari F50 defines a F-1 road car. The F50 is able to hit 60 mph in only 3.7 seconds and complete a quarter mile in 10.7 seconds at 125 mph. Top speed of this beauty is 202 mph. The initial MSRP of the F50 was $417,000. Now, the F50 sells for between $2 and $3 million USD. If you were fortunate enough to obtain this car from Ferrari on release, you purchased a true treasure… and also made a small fortune.

From 1968 to 1971, the McLaren M7A represented the company in F1 racing. Unfortunately, this car didn’t impress during the first two seasons, with only 6 points of a possible 180. Overall, the best placement during that time was 4th place. But, this car, being driven by Bruce McLaren, would win the company’s 1st F1 victory. In 1963, Bruce McLaren founded his Motor Racing company. Beforehand, Bruce was the factory driver for the Cooper motor racing team. This sound similar to the story of Enzo Ferrari beginning at Alfa Romeo, then venturing alone. Then, finally, in 1968, Bruce McLaren won the 1968 Belgian Grand Prix. This truly shows with commitment and dedication, anything is possible!

The McLaren M7A begins with a mid-engine Ford-Cosworth DFV 3.0-liter naturally aspirated V8. This motor works in combo with a Hewland DG30 5-speed manual transmission. Backing up this motor are Goodyear tires and Shell fuel, two companies that are still around today. This open-wheel, single-seater race car weighs only 1,140 lbs. This is almost half a ton! Unfortunately, it did sustain damage at the 1968 Monaco Grand Prix, but was repaired to race again. Furthermore, the M7B, M7C, and M7D have a basis in this vehicle, with their own modifications. McLaren began the journey here, and continues today.

In 2018, McLaren celebrated 50 years since the 1st F1 victory with the McLaren 720S Spa 68 Collection. But, initially, M7A’s F1 racing debut from 1968 to 1971 included 22 races and 4 wins. Now, this car is a respectable start to what is now an amazing sports car company. Through the years, McLaren has come a long way, and Bruce would most likely be proud. Today’s McLaren sports cars are absolutely stunning masterpieces available on the market. Who doesn’t want to own a McLaren? Well… maybe some people. But, most do! In conclusion, the McLaren M7A was the true start of McLaren’s successful F1 racing history.

With the World Premiere of the Porsche 911 992 approaching, the company is seeking to increase anticipation. Mark Webber, an ex-Formula One driver, was able to drive and see this car without the typical camouflage. The 992 contains the biggest changes since the 991’s release. After returning from the fast laps at Porsche’s development center in Weissach, Webber stated:

“In a word, that was awesome. There are so many highlights. The wide front axle, for example, seemed to give it greater cornering performance and turning-in became even more precise. The different front and back wheel sizes make a big difference to stability when you’re changing direction quickly too. As for the design, I love it: it’s very clear and typical Porsche.” – Mark Webber

Some Basics on the 992

The Porsche 911 992 is a stunning enhancement, inside and out. Firstly, the base model is going to jump from 370 hp to 385 hp. But, the Carrera S will leap from 420 hp to 450hp. Furthermore, the GTS should reach around 480 hp. Beyond the power gains, the car has a new rear fascia with wide rear body work (72 inches wide). With a wider rear body, this allows for a larger active spoiler as well. But, to note, the wheelbase did not change. Currently, the plan is to sell the car with a 19” front wheel and 20” rear wheel staggered setup. To comfort these rims, Pirelli P Zero tires are brought into play.

With all of the hype, Porsche is anticipating a leap forward in sales as well. Obviously, Mark Webber was brought it for marketing purposes to help Porsche reach more fans. For the 2018 Range Rover Sport, the company decided to take on the Dragon Challenge. The 2018 Range Rover Sport Dragon Challenge encompasses Tianmen Mountain Road in the Hunan Province of China. This road incorporates 99 hairpin turns on 7 miles of mountainside road. Usually, this road is strictly in use by ECO buses. Furthermore, to reach the summit, there is a 999-step staircase. This staircase leads to “Heaven’s Gate”, a natural rock arch in the mountainside. Mythically, this location is thought to be where the mortal world comes into contact with the world of the gods.

To complete the 2018 Range Rover Sport Dragon Challenge, the company decided to use driver Ho-Pin Tung. He is a Le Mans 24 Hours winner and driver for the Jaguar Formula E Racing team. The first step was to tackle Tianmen Mountain Road’s 7-miles of 99 hairpin turns. In Terrain Response 2 mode, the SUV maneuvers better, allowing to complete it with ease. But, that was not the major challenge. The largest challenge was tackling the 45-degree angle of the 999 step staircase to “Heaven’s Gate”. In Mud and Ruts mode, the Sport was able to accomplish this feat. This made the Range Rover Sport the first car that made it to “Heaven’s Gate” in only 22 minutes and 41 seconds.

After such a feat by Range Rover, it is only a certain amount of time before contenders step up to the plate. Obviously, this depends if China officials allow it to take place again. The 2018 Range Rover Sport Dragon Challenge is quite impressive, showing the capabilities of the SUV. With many different modes, the Sport can handle everything from hairpin turns to off-road adventures. Although it is a bit pricey, this car is definitely worth it for those who can afford it. The Maserati Levante was aimed at the Sports level of market, but probably can’t accomplish this type of feat. But, nobody truly knows, so maybe they should try it sometime. In conclusion, the 2018 Range Rover Sport is a beastly SUV showing the power of the Land Rover company.

In a Top Gear style stunt, Red Bull Formula One drivers Daniel Ricciardo and Max Verstappen pull the ultimate race. Each driving an Aston Martin Vanquish variant, the two F1 drivers pull caravans around the ring. This Aston Martin caravan race takes place at the F1 Austrian Grand Prix track. At 1,760 lbs., the caravans didn’t stop the Aston Martins from a track day. Fortunately, the cars and drivers survived… unfortunately, the caravans did not.

The drivers for the Aston Martin caravan race were Daniel Ricciardo and Max Verstappen. Ricciardo made his F1 debut in 2011 with Toro Rosso, Red Bull’s entry driver team. Now, everyone knows the Vanquish Volante is ready for the caravan road trip.

On the other hand, Max Verstappen made his start in F1 racing in 2015. Surprisingly, Verstappen was only 17 years old! This makes him the youngest F1 driver in history. This stunt wasn’t completely new as Verstappen. He once took the Red Bull F1 car up an Austrian Alps ski slope… yes, really. Lastly, Verstappen drove an Aston Martin Vanquish S Volante with 603 horsepower in the race.

Regardless, Red Bull can still put on quite the show, on and off the F1 track. In conclusion, the Aston Martin Vanquish is a powerhouse waiting to show the world what it is capable of… or not?
