In a Top Gear style stunt, Red Bull Formula One drivers Daniel Ricciardo and Max Verstappen pull the ultimate race. Each driving an Aston Martin Vanquish variant, the two F1 drivers pull caravans around the ring. This Aston Martin caravan race takes place at the F1 Austrian Grand Prix track. At 1,760 lbs., the caravans didn’t stop the Aston Martins from a track day. Fortunately, the cars and drivers survived… unfortunately, the caravans did not.

In the 1990 Formula 1 season, Ferrari used the 641, also known as the F1-90. This Formula 1 racing car was the main vehicle of the Ferrari racing team for the entirety of the season. The Ferrari 641’s design is by Enrique Scalabroni and Steve Nichols. Furthermore, Steve Nichols was a McLaren designer who helped the project. With 6 wins during the 1990 Formula 1 season, the Ferrari 641 was competitive with McLaren, but at 10 horsepower less. At high speed, the 641 held its ground regardless of the power difference.

The Ferrari 641 sports a Ferrari Tipo 036 3.5-liter mid-engine V12. This motor is capable of 680 base horsepower. Furthermore, the engine works in combo with a 7-speed semi-auto transmission. In San Marino, the 641 withheld the number 037 engine instead. This motor works on Agip fuel, a former Italian auto gasoline. To get the power to the ground, the 641 has Goodyear tires. The Ferrari 641 Formula 1 race car was built with a race worthy chassis and suspension. Firstly, the 641’s chassis comprimes a Kevlar and carbon fiber composite monocoque. Next, the suspension differs slightly in the front and rear. Both the front and the rear contain anti-roll bars, double wishbones, and telescopic shock absorbers. In the front, there is push-rod actuated torsion bar springs. On the other end, in the rear, there is push-rod actuated coil springs. Surprisingly, only one 641 chassis is non existent today due to destruction in testing. Lastly, while two remain in museums, four are privately owned by collectors.

This Ferrari 641 article is basically a throwback to the 1990 Formula 1 Racing season. Although this vehicle was not the best race car on the track, it still won 6 races. One of these vehicles was also in a famous collision at the Japanese Grand Prix with the McLaren race car. The Ferrari 641 and the McLaren battled it out frequently for whom was the best car. At the 2017 Frankfurt International Auto Show, Mercedes-AMG revealed the Project One Hypercar. At $2.8 million MSRP, the Project One is a formula-1 inspired hypercar. After long speculation of a Mercedes hypercar, Mercedes-AMG did not disappoint. With production beginning in 2019, the vehicle will be limited to 275 units which are already sold out. Surprisingly, the Mercedes-AMG Project One Hypercar may not sport the motor system you were expecting.

1.6-Liter Turbocharged V6 & Electric Motor Combination

Unlike the Bugatti Chiron that has 1500 horsepower via a 8.0-liter W16 motor, the Mercedes-AMG Project One will sport a 1.6-liter turbocharged V6 and electric motors. With the 8.0-liter W16, the Chiron can shed a 26 gallon tank of gasoline in 8 minutes flat… phew! Although the Project One has a much smaller motor, it can hit 0-60 mph in only 2.6 seconds and reach a top speed of 217 mph. The V6 motor itself producing around 700 horsepower with a 11,000 rpm limit. The three electric motors produce 500 horsepower themselves, leading to ~1,200 horsepower total.

The electric motors act in a multitude of ways on the Project One. First, there is one electric motor located at each of the front wheels. The third electric motor is within the engine bay. A fourth electric motor spins the turbocharger so there is never lag when acceleration is necessary. Another benefit to this overall electrical setup is that the plugin hybrid system allows for torque vectoring. On the hybrid drive system alone, the Project One can complete 20 miles silently for those late night cruises.

The Project One was engineered with a lightweight carbon fiber body. Furthermore, Carbon wheels and carbon ceramic brakes complement the body. The front and rear spoilers are active which help with cornering. Although expected with other Mercedes models, automation is not an option on this vehicle. Another difference is that the doors open forward then up rather than directly outwards.

The Project One’s body has adequate intakes and vents to keep the motor cool and breathing well. On the interior, it looks like a F1 car with a passenger seat. The steering wheel has multicolored buttons and dials. On the dash, there are dual 10 inch hi-resolution LCD screens. The rear view mirror system is camera based rather than simply a mirror.

Overall, the Mercedes-AMG Project One Hypercar is a brand new addition to the highly collectible cars realm. With a combination of electric and fuel, this car can compete with the best of the best. The top speed may not be as high as some competitors but for a V6 and electricity, it speaks for itself. The carbon fiber body, wheels, and brakes make for an authentic racing appearance. In the end, if you were able to pay $2.8 million for one of 275 units, you are one lucky car collector.

With the World Premiere of the Porsche 911 992 approaching, the company is seeking to increase anticipation. Mark Webber, an ex-Formula One driver, was able to drive and see this car without the typical camouflage. The 992 contains the biggest changes since the 991’s release. After returning from the fast laps at Porsche’s development center in Weissach, Webber stated:

“In a word, that was awesome. There are so many highlights. The wide front axle, for example, seemed to give it greater cornering performance and turning-in became even more precise. The different front and back wheel sizes make a big difference to stability when you’re changing direction quickly too. As for the design, I love it: it’s very clear and typical Porsche.” – Mark Webber

Obviously, this statement provides clarity that this car is quite a beast of a machine. Let’s take a small dip into the changes that will be occurring with the 992 below.

Some Basics on the 992

The Porsche 911 992 is a stunning enhancement, inside and out. Firstly, the base model is going to jump from 370 hp to 385 hp. But, the Carrera S will leap from 420 hp to 450hp. Furthermore, the GTS should reach around 480 hp. Beyond the power gains, the car has a new rear fascia with wide rear body work (72 inches wide). With a wider rear body, this allows for a larger active spoiler as well. But, to note, the wheelbase did not change. Currently, the plan is to sell the car with a 19” front wheel and 20” rear wheel staggered setup. To comfort these rims, Pirelli P Zero tires are brought into play.

Automotive News reports that the new Audi A8 will come with options for either the V8 or the W12 that is currently only used by Bentley. Specs for the A8 Horch W12 include a 585 bhp, 6.0-litre engine which is more powerful than Audi’s previous generation A8 W12.

In the Bentley Continental, the W12 puts out about 582 horsepower and uses a 6.0-liter engine. The Rolls-Royce Phantom boasts 563 bhp. The modifications planned for the new Horch A8 will now make it competitive with the other W12 cars.

The Revival of the Horch Name

The revival of the Horch name pays tribute to one of Audi’s original founders, just as Mercedes’ revival of Maybach did.

Right now, Audi has no plans for a stand-alone model under the Horch name. Audi has said that they don’t plan to use the moniker on any other vehicle but the Audi A8. It seems fitting that their top-of-the-line vehicle would carry the name of their founder.

Despite the fact that the plans for the Horch A8 W12 are complete, no production date has yet been set.

The Aston Martin Valkyrie is in production at the Gaydon, Warwickshire, England facility. Here, Aston will produce 150 units through 2018. Originally, this vehicle was called the Nebula which is an acronym for Newey, Red Bull, and Aston Martin. Although, the final code name was AM-RB 001 which stands for Aston Martin-Red Bull 001. Once it was time to hit production, the vehicle title became Valkyrie. Valkyrie is a word in relation to Scandinavian mythology. It stands for the beautiful twelve handmaidens of Odin who conducted the slain warriors of their choice from the battlefield of Valhalla.

From 1968 to 1971, the McLaren M7A represented the company in F1 racing. Unfortunately, this car didn’t impress during the first two seasons, with only 6 points of a possible 180. In 1963, Bruce McLaren founded his Motor Racing company. Beforehand, Bruce was the factory driver for the Cooper motor racing team. This sound similar to the story of Enzo Ferrari beginning at Alfa Romeo, then venturing alone. Then, finally, in 1968, Bruce McLaren won the 1968 Belgian Grand Prix.
