A New Generation for the CLA

With the fresh upcoming year of 2019, manufacturers will introduce technology that’ll be the anticipation of the next decade. At CES 2019 in Las Vegas, Nevada, Mercedes-Benz plants to unveil the next-gen CLA. Not surprisingly, a few other vehicles will be on display at the Benz CES booth, all new to the United States. Mercedes intends to showcase the most technologically advanced automobiles it has ready to unveil. With the date approaching, Mercedes shared a teaser as seen at the top of the article. This is the roofline of the new CLA. The car should look like an a-class with a 4-door, coupe roof style setup.

Hopes for the Next-Gen CLA

With the next-gen CLA, the first hope is for better rear headroom. Previously, this car was known for rear headroom issues. Furthermore, this car will sport the MBUX infotainment system. This provides the driver with AI-powered assistance. This includes language commands as well as “identifies operation requests on basis of movements”. This statement seems to mean that the driver will be able to use hand or body motion to control the vehicle. This is not new, as BMW seems to be onto the same project.

The CLA Won’t Be Alone!

With the next-gen CLA, Mercedes plans to display the Mercedes-Benz EQC electric SUV. On top of that, the Mercedes-Benz Vision Urbanetic Concept will be there too. The EQC electric SUV aims to offer customers with 402 horsepower and 564 lb.-ft. of torque. Furthermore, the electric batteries shall allow it to drive for around 280 miles before requiring recharge. It won’t be surprising if Benz begins to offer hybrid versions of typical cars, including the CLA. With the upcoming decade of 2020 to 2030, manufacturers will probably make the shift to hybrids and EVs. In conclusion, anyone in attendance at CES 2019 should be looking for the Mercedes booth!

If you’ve seen The Lost World: Jurassic Park movie, you may have noticed the Mercedes-Benz SUVs throughout the film. For the expedition to Isla Sorna, InGen builds three customized 1997 Mercedes-Benz ML320 SUVs. The purpose of these vehicles is to drive and navigate the island for transporting equipment. This equipment mostly consists of camera and study items. The nicknames for the three vehicles are: AAV Fontana, AAV Montana, and AAV Santana. Unfortunately, the Montana was left behind in this film. Regardless, these vehicles “shine bright like a diamond” through the film.

The film The Lost World: Jurassic Park was released on May 19, 1997 by director Steven Spielberg. This 1997 film was able to reach a box office value of 618.6 million USD on a 73 million USD budget. Furthermore, at 2 hours and 9 minutes, this film provides quite a look into InGen’s invasion of Isla Sorna. One main reason for their invasion is to capture dinosaurs to display at an amphitheater zoo in San Diego. Dr. Ian Malcolm, played by Jeff Goldblum, thinks this is a terrible idea, and he isn’t far from being correct. Over the film, the entire process turns into a disaster leading up to a t-rex invasion of San Diego. With such a large box office value, the film unfortunately didn’t receive amazing reviews, with a rating of 6.5/10 by IMDb.

For the film, the three 1997 Mercedes-Benz ML320 SUVs were customized with a ton of aftermarket components. Each of three vehicles have the following options:

  • Leather Seats
  • Rear Taillight Guards
  • Winch
  • 4-Wheel Drive

These features provide the basis for the overall vehicles before the additional options differentiate the three 320s. Next, each vehicle will be discussed pointing out the additional features that distinguish them individually from the others. The AAV Fontana, AAV Montana, and AAV Santana all have features that provide them slightly different advantages in varying situations.

For the 1997 Mercedes-Benz ML320 AAV Fontana, the car has quite a few additional features. These features include:

  • Duel Mounted Side Mirror Search Lights

Each of these vehicles serves a slightly different purpose due to their features. Unfortunately, two of these vehicles were destroyed during the film. Luckily, for the AAV Montana, it remained safe in the InGen gatherers equipment facility.

R.I.P. AAV Fontana & AAV Santana

Unfortunately, the AAV Fontana and AAV Santana didn’t remain safe during the film. While attempting to fix a young tyrannosaurus rex’s leg, two adult T. rexes show up. As this occurs, the AAV Fontana ML320 is hurtled off the cliff. However, the T. rex adults don’t stop there… the entire trailer containing Ian, Nick, & Sarah is pushed about halfway over the cliff. This causes the characters to fall and eventually dangle from a rope. This rope is set up by Eddie who drives the AAV Santana to the scene. Unfortunately, for Eddie, the two T. rex adults return, and he doesn’t survive, and neither does the Santana.

Overall, The Lost World: Jurassic Park is a great movie. Critics may not agree, but if you’re a fan of dinosaurs, you’re missing out if you haven’t seen it. Furthermore, the 1997 Mercedes-Benz ML320 SUVs were a perfect match for the movie. These vehicles are built for adventures and the outdoors, so their arrival on Isla Sorna isn’t a surprise. Even though the AAV Fontana and Santana didn’t survive, the AAV Montana is still alive! Long live the Jurassic Park Mercedes-Benz SUV!

In 2018, competition between European automobile manufacturers is still the norm. From Audi to BMW to Mercedes-Benz, these competitors are always attempting to overwhelm their counterparts. In this article, we will compare the 2018 Audi RS5, BMW M4, and Mercedes-AMG C63 S Coupe. Each car, with its own unique design, has pros and cons. Below, the comparison will determine the true winner of this battle.

2018 Audi RS5

The 2018 Audi RS5 was released to market in June 2017 in Europe. At a MSRP equivalent of $85,495, the RS5 has aimed at a higher market target. The 2018 RS5 is powered by a twin-turbo 2.9-liter V6 compared to the previous 4.2-liter V8. This new motor produces 450 horsepower and 443 lb.-ft. of torque. Audi estimates the RS5 can hit 60 mph in only 3.9 seconds and has a top speed of 174 mph. With that number, the RS5 leaps forward into the realm of true sports car accelerations.

2018 BMW M4

Next, the 2018 BMW M4 is available in a coupe and convertible build with MSRPs of $67,195 and $75,695, respectively. For this analysis, the coupe will be considered the competitor. The M4’s 3.0-liter inline-six engine produces 425 horsepower and 406 lb.-ft. of torque. With the Competition package, the M4 boasts 444 horsepower, slightly closer to the RS5. This power allows the M4 to hit 60 mph in only 3.9 seconds, 0.1 seconds faster than the RS5. Lastly, the M4 has a top speed of 163 mph.

2018 Mercedes-AMG C63 S Coupe

Lastly, the 2018 Mercedes-AMG C63 S Coupe still offers the lustful V8 engine at a MSRP of $75,500. With a 4.0-liter AMG V8 twin-turbo, the C63 S Coupe delivers 503 horsepower and 516 lb.-ft. of torque. Already, Mercedes has around 50 horsepower more than the competition. This power allows the C63 S Coupe to hit 60 mph in 3.8 seconds. Unfortunately for Mercedes, the 50 extra horsepower didn’t do its homework. With a governor, the C63 S Coupe has a top speed of 180 mph. Usually, the governor is a sign that it can go, indeed, faster.

The Comparison

In comparison, the Mercedes-AMG C63 S Coupe has the highest amount of winning parameters. First, the C63 S Coupe sports a V8 with 50 more horsepower than the competition. Although this doesn’t win the 0-60 mph run, it will win at top speed, considering it hits 180 mph with a limiter. The Audi RS5 takes last place on the 0-60 mph run only by 0.1 seconds. For MSRP, the BMW M4 is the cheapest automobile followed by the AMG C63 S Coupe and the RS5. Note, the RS5 value is an estimation based on it’s value in Euros, so U.S. price may be slightly lower.

Winner: 2018 Mercedes-AMG C63 S Coupe

Overall, the Mercedes-AMG C63 S Coupe comes in first place in the is competition. It may not be the most environmental friendly, but in a competition of speed, this car wins. Second place can be considered given to the BMW M4 which can hit 60 mph just as fast as the AMG V8. It is also almost $10,000 less at MSRP. In last place, the Audi RS5 came in close, but not close enough. Behind by only 0.1 seconds on the 0-60, the RS5 ends up being the slowest accelerator here. The RS5 does come in second place for top speed though. In the end, the AMG C63 S Coupe takes the victory home for the 2018 model year.

In 2017, Smart displayed their newest invention at the Frankfurt Motor Show in the form of a musical. Smart is a small vehicle company owned by Daimler AG, the same parent company as Mercedes-Benz. The Smart Vision EQ ForTwo Concept is a self-driving intelligent vehicle that will be the future of “urban luxury”. Powered by a 30 kilowatt lithium-ion battery, the ForTwo will be fully autonomous. The vehicle will not be personally owned but rather an alternative means of transportation.

The ForTwo Will Analyze Passenger Compatability

The Smart Vision EQ ForTwo Concept car will pick up passengers on demand. Similar to Uber Pool and Lyft Line, the ForTwo will allow passengers to “split” expenses. The ForTwo will use advanced technology to analyze passengers Facebook pages for compatibility information. Examples of this include music preferences, Facebook likes, and profile information. The first rider can decline the matching option unlike the second rider. If privacy is a concern, the bench seat turns into a two-part barrier.

“…Cars Should Make Use of Themselves…”

The goal of the ForTwo is to have an autonomous, connected, electric, and shareable vehicle. The purpose of this is to reduce emissions, noise pollution, and traffic in the city. “The basic idea is that cars should make use of themselves in the city” said Dieter Zelsche, chairman of Daimler AG’s Board of Management. At level 5 of 5 on the self-driving scale, the ForTwo will pursue the highest automation specs possible. This car fits in the Mercedes-Benz concept to deliver 10 electric vehicles to market by 2020. Although, this vehicle will most likely never make it to the road.

The ForTwo Stores Passenger Preferences

To help passengers identify the vehicle, the headlights can be customized to a specific color for distinguishability. Once the passenger enters the ForTwo, the car will greet the passenger with their profile picture. The ForTwo will also store preferences such as in-car entertainment, places, and routes. When the ForTwo runs low on juice, it will automatically recharge at the closest recharging station. Another unexpected perk is that the ForTwo can connect and feed the grid as a “swarm battery”. Lastly, the side panels of the vehicle can display news, sports scores, time, and weather information while not in motion.

Overall, the Smart Vision EQ ForTwo Concept car is a vision of the future. From its fully autonomous function to its customizability per passenger, it is a leap forward in the automotive realm. The ForTwo Concept is the type of the vehicle that will inevitably replace the jobs of many drivers worldwide. At this level of technology, the vehicle can provide the feeling that it is your own. In the end, the movement of autonomous vehicles will clearly alter the world from what it is today.

At the 2017 Frankfurt International Auto Show, Mercedes-AMG revealed the Project One Hypercar. At $2.8 million MSRP, the Project One is a formula-1 inspired hypercar. After long speculation of a Mercedes hypercar, Mercedes-AMG did not disappoint. With production beginning in 2019, the vehicle will be limited to 275 units which are already sold out. Surprisingly, the Mercedes-AMG Project One Hypercar may not sport the motor system you were expecting.

1.6-Liter Turbocharged V6 & Electric Motor Combination

Unlike the Bugatti Chiron that has 1500 horsepower via a 8.0-liter W16 motor, the Mercedes-AMG Project One will sport a 1.6-liter turbocharged V6 and electric motors. With the 8.0-liter W16, the Chiron can shed a 26 gallon tank of gasoline in 8 minutes flat… phew! Although the Project One has a much smaller motor, it can hit 0-60 mph in only 2.6 seconds and reach a top speed of 217 mph. The V6 motor itself producing around 700 horsepower with a 11,000 rpm limit. The three electric motors produce 500 horsepower themselves, leading to ~1,200 horsepower total.

Mercedes-AMG Project One Electric Motors

The electric motors act in a multitude of ways on the Project One. First, there is one electric motor located at each of the front wheels. The third electric motor is within the engine bay. A fourth electric motor spins the turbocharger so there is never lag when acceleration is necessary. Another benefit to this overall electrical setup is that the plugin hybrid system allows for torque vectoring. On the hybrid drive system alone, the Project One can complete 20 miles silently for those late night cruises.

The Project One was engineered with a lightweight carbon fiber body. Furthermore, Carbon wheels and carbon ceramic brakes complement the body. The front and rear spoilers are active which help with cornering. Although expected with other Mercedes models, automation is not an option on this vehicle. Another difference is that the doors open forward then up rather than directly outwards.

The Project One’s body has adequate intakes and vents to keep the motor cool and breathing well. On the interior, it looks like a F1 car with a passenger seat. The steering wheel has multicolored buttons and dials. On the dash, there are dual 10 inch hi-resolution LCD screens. The rear view mirror system is camera based rather than simply a mirror.

Overall, the Mercedes-AMG Project One Hypercar is a brand new addition to the highly collectible cars realm. With a combination of electric and fuel, this car can compete with the best of the best. The top speed may not be as high as some competitors but for a V6 and electricity, it speaks for itself. The carbon fiber body, wheels, and brakes make for an authentic racing appearance. In the end, if you were able to pay $2.8 million for one of 275 units, you are one lucky car collector.

After 2 years with a 2015 Mercedes-Benz GLA250 4MATIC, the car displayed both positives and negatives. Starting at a MSRP of around $34,225, the GLA is the little brother of the GL series. The 2015 GLA250 4MATIC sports a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine pushing 208 horsepower and 258 lb.-ft. of torque. The GLA250 4MATIC can complete a 0-60 mph acceleration in 6.4 seconds. In circular turning, the GLA recorded 0.87 g.

On the positive side, the 2015 Mercedes-Benz GLA250 4MATIC has a comfortable interior and ride. The interior has a sporty design with leatherette and inlay options. The suspension maintains a sporty feel while providing the comfort a Benz is expected to offer. For a SUV, the GLA250 isn’t a terrible gas guzzler, leading to a positive fuel consumption experience. Lastly, the GLA250 styling is sleek and sporty.

On the negative side, the 2015 Mercedes-Benz GLA250 4MATIC boasts blind spots and disappointing tech. The design of the vehicle increases the blind spots of the vehicle, making blind spot assist a highly recommended feature. Tech wise, the navigation unit is disappointing compared to Audi’s Google Maps integration. The system is a bit difficult to navigate for beginners and is not extremely user friendly. Hopefully, this is being improved in the face lifted version of the car. On top of that, an issue in the vehicle reviewed was the display unit which would tends to shut off for a few seconds when hitting bumps or potholes on the road. In major cities in the Northeast U.S., this makes the display unit dip a frequent occurrence.

The 2015 GLA250 4MATIC Holds to the Mercedes-Benz Reputation

Overall, the 2015 Mercedes-Benz GLA250 4MATIC proved to be a pretty decent automobile. The comfort and sportiness made up for the discrepancies in the technology. From what was seen at the North American International Auto Show 2017 in Detroit, the GLA250 facelift offered enhancements in each direction. If you’re considering purchasing a used GLA250 4MATIC, you aren’t making the wrong decision. In the end, you won’t be disappointed with your experience.
