Volkswagen Electric Race Car: Eyes Set on Pikes Peak Record

Volkswagen’s Eyes Set on Pikes Peak Record

After 31 years of not participating, Volkswagen is taking aim at the Pikes Peak hill climb record. To do so, VW is building an electric race car with hopes of accomplishing this goal. The Pikes Peak International Hill Climb takes place at Pikes Peak near Colorado Springs. The 2018 hill climb event will occur on June 24, 2018. By this date, VW hopes to build a car that will defeat any and all competition.

Pikes Peak International Hill Climb

In the year 1916, the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb began taking place in the beautiful Rocky Mountains of Colorado. At a length of 12.4 miles, this hill climb takes drivers up a total of 4,700 feet in height to reach the peak. The summit of Pikes Peak is slightly over 14,000 feet above sea level. Back in 2016, the hill climb record for a modified electric vehicle was 8 minutes and 57.118 seconds. For this record, driver Rhys Millen drove a e0 PP100 vehicle. In the same year, the Tesla Model S set the record for a production vehicle climb at 11 minutes and 48.264 seconds.

Statement by Dr. Frank Welsch of VW’s Board

“The Pikes Peak hill climb is one of the world’s most renowned car races,” stated Dr. Frank Welsch, a VW board member. “It poses an enormous challenge and is therefore perfectly suited to proving the capabilities of upcoming technology.”.

VW Sets Target for Electric Vehicles

This statement by Frank Welsch is a signal that VW is aiming to leap forward in vehicle technology. By succeeding at Pikes Peak, VW would improve their reputation in the auto community. This is definitely a necessary requirement after the entire diesel emissions fiasco. Welsch hopes that the Pikes Peak program will provide VW with a gain of knowledge in the electric vehicles realm. Volkswagen aims to release an EV crossover in 2020 as well as revive the Microbus as an EV for 2022.

Volkswagen is Determined to Win

Overall, Volkswagen is aiming to obtain the Pikes Peak record. A victory like this would prove beneficial to a company that had a dip in reputability in the last few years. The fiasco may have injured VW’s reputation but a leap forward into the electric cars could prove beneficial. If VW is able to make competitive EV vehicles, it will join in on the competition of the future. Brands such as Mercedes already have major goals for electric vehicles meaning. In June 2018, the world will have their eyes set on VW as they attempt to obtain the Pikes Peak record.
