2018 BMW M2 – Front – PAS 2018 – EuroDrift

Just this week, BMW began testing their new BMW vehicle subscription service in Nashville, Tennessee. Similar to the Cadillac and Volvo subscription services, drivers can request vehicles through a mobile app and if desired, can even drive a different car every day of the month.

Once you request your car from the BMW subscription service, a concierge from the local dealer delivers the car to you. It comes fully fueled and detailed and you can even have them preset the car to match your preferences.

Lease, Buy, or Use the BMW Vehicle Subscription Service?

2018 BMW M4 - Front - PAS 2018 - EuroDrift

Most people are familiar with the buying and leasing process. What they may not realize is how the BMW subscription service might better fit their needs.

A lease can allow you to drive a car for a lower monthly sum than it takes to finance a purchase. For many, it’s a way to drive a nicer car without having a hefty down payment. However, when leasing, you are tied to that one vehicle for the term of your lease and you still have to find auto insurance and maintain the car.

Subscription plans allow you to “own” or “rent” a car month-to-month. This is perfect for those who don’t want the hassle of owning or maintaining a car year around. The BMW subscription service also includes insurance, maintenance, and roadside assistance as part of the subscription fee.

How Much Does It Cost?

BMW’s New Subscription Service I Fortune – Fortune Magazine – YouTube

The cost of the BMW vehicle subscription service is similar to that of other car companies. For between $2,000 and $3,700, BMW lovers can pick between various models such as the BMW M2, the 5 Series, and the X5.

For hybrid enthusiasts, the 530e iPerformance and X5 xDrive40e iPerformance are also available.

And if speed is your thing, then you might want to tool around town in the M4 convertible, M5, M6 convertible, X5M, or X6M.

As of now, the BMW vehicle subscription service is still in the testing phase. Nashville should allow them to learn and grow the program to better meet the needs of their customers before launching it across the country.

The Aston Martin Valkyrie is in production at the Gaydon, Warwickshire, England facility. Here, Aston will produce 150 units through 2018. Originally, this vehicle was called the Nebula which is an acronym for Newey, Red Bull, and Aston Martin. Although, the final code name was AM-RB 001 which stands for Aston Martin-Red Bull 001. Once it was time to hit production, the vehicle title became Valkyrie. Valkyrie is a word in relation to Scandinavian mythology. It stands for the beautiful twelve handmaidens of Odin who conducted the slain warriors of their choice from the battlefield of Valhalla.

In a collaboration with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Lamborghini has created a new type of supercar. The Lamborghini Terzo Millennio Concept supercar is a prototype that hints towards the future of the automotive industry. For your knowledge, Terzo Millennio stands for “Third Millennium” in Italian. The Terzo Millennio was first unveiled at the EmTech conference in Cambridge, MA. This prototype is a display of the first complete year of a partnership between Lamborghini and MIT that will span a total of three years.

In-Wheel Electric Motors & Supercapacitors

As this vehicle is a prototype, the final stage of development is still a far distance away. This means that a lot of the features are still works in-progress. Lamborghini hopes to power the Terzo Millennio with in-wheel electric motors. Furthermore, the car will have supercapacitors built into the carbon fiber panels to help power the vehicle. Capacitors are currently used in hybrid vehicles to restart a motor, but not to fully operate a vehicle. Basically, the car itself will be a battery. The reason for this strategy is that current lithium-ion batteries have slower performance as well as lose recharge capacity over time.

Futuristic Supercar Design with Self-Healing Technology

Lamborghini Terzo Millennio Concept - Rear - Lamborghini - EuroDrift

Lamborghini Terzo Millennio Concept – Rear – Lamborghini – EuroDrift

On the exterior, the Lamborghini Terzo Millennio Concept Supercar has the trademark Lamborghini “Y” taillights. On the front, the windshield spans from the top of the car all the way down to what seems the pedal level. The overall Terzo Millennio is extremely low to the ground, as if it were part of it. Lamborghini also has plans to bring the exterior of vehicles to the future with the Terzo Millennio. The exterior of the vehicle will detect wear and tear. On top of this, there will be micro-channels within the vehicle’s carbon fiber body that will contain “healing chemistries”. These chemicals will automatically repair small cracks, basically making it a self-healing vehicle.

A Vision of the Future of the Automotive Industry

Overall, the Lamborghini Terzo Millennio Concept Supercar is vision of the future. From it’s futuristic outlook on power to the self-healing capabilities, this car will be a true feat of engineering. There are currently no plans to bring this car to market, at least for now. The technology that will develop during this partnership with MIT will most likely be visible in future models. It is also expected that these advancements will be used by Lamborghini’s parent company, Volkswagen. In conclusion, the Lamborghini Terzo Millennio Concept Supercar is a dream of what is to be the next generation vehicle.

Porsche Mission E: Tesla’s New EV Competitor

Porsche Mission E: Tesla’s New EV Competitor

Porsche Mission E to be Sold in 2019

In 2019, Porsche will begin selling the all-new Mission E sedan. The Porsche Mission E is a fully electric 4-seater sport sedan. The purpose of this vehicle is to compete in the electric vehicle industry which is the future of transportation. As expected, the Mission E has its eyes set on Tesla. On release, the Porsche Mission E will have a MSRP of about $85,000.

“Our core area of expertise lies in complex, efficient, and high-performance power trains – just look at the 918 Spyder or 919 Hybrid”, stated Stefan Weckbach, the Mission E project head.

Two Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motors (PSMs)

The Porsche Mission E sedan will sport two permanent magnet synchronous motors (PSMs). These were used in the Porsche 919 Hybrid that won Le Mans. This system allows for energy recovery while braking that can be used to continue propulsion. One of these motors powers the front axle while the other powers the rear. With these motors, the Mission E can hit 60 mph in only 3.5 seconds. Surprisingly, the Mission E can hit 124 mph in less than 12 seconds – phew. These motors produce a combined 600+ horsepower.

“Fifteen minutes is an acceptable amount of charging time. And with 800 volts, it’s also feasible.” – Stefan Weckbach

800 Volt Charging System

In the Porsche Mission E, the voltage is double the standard charging value at 800 volts. This allows for shorter charging times and decreases the overall weight of the vehicle. With a lithium-ion battery, the Mission E can drive more than 300 miles on a single charge. To get another 250 miles, simply recharge for 15 minutes – enough time to grab coffee, or a quick meal. With an 800 volt charging system, the Mission E can still be recharged at a typical 400 volt recharging station.

Electric Vehicles are the Future

Overall, the Porsche Mission E is expected to stir up the electric vehicle market. As Tesla currently holds reign in this sub-industry, Porsche and other brands will be making their appearances in the next few years. From Audi to Mercedes-Benz to Porsche, each brand understands the need for a motion towards a fully electric future. Without an exhaust, the cars may not sound the same but they sure are just as fact – if not faster. In the end, auto enthusiasts will probably be happy to take the Mission E for a ride, or two.

Porsche Passport: Car Subscription Service for $2,000 Minimum per Month

Porsche Passport: Car Subscription Service for $2,000 Minimum per Month

Porsche Car Subscription Service

In 2017, Porsche is bringing a brand-new car sales concept to market. Starting in the Atlanta area, Porsche will run a new pilot program that offers car subscription services called Porsche Passport. For $2,000 minimum per month, a Porsche subscriber will have access to any Porsche model they desire, whenever they desire it. Basically, with the subscription service, a subscriber will be able to load an application and request a different model whenever they please. This is an interesting take on profitability and I think this may be the future of auto leases.

Starts November 2017 in Atlanta, Georgia

Starting next month, in November 2017, Porsche will offer the subscription service in Atlanta. With a base price of $2,000 per month, this includes sports cars and SUVs. Porsche refers to this as “white-glove” service and plans to provide a flexible schedule to all subscribers. Porsche teamed up with Clutch Technologies, LLC to bring this concept to life. Porsche’s Strategy 2025 is a reason that this concept is being rolled out. Their plan is to appeal more to customers’ desire and to provide the experience of each Porsche sports car.

Starts at $2,000 per Month

For $2,000 per month, the driver will have access to models including the Boxter, Cayman, and 6 other models. At $3,000 per month, the plan increases the number of cars to 22 models including a Cayenne E-Hybrid. The subscription includes detailing, insurance maintenance, registration, and vehicle tax. There is also a $500 activation fee as well as a credit check for people to access the Porsche Passport app. The application will be placed on Android and iOS.

Audi on Demand & Care by Volvo

In San Francisco, Audi runs “Audi on Demand” which is somewhat of a concierge rental service. There is also a plan by Volvo for “Care by Volvo” which is another subscription service. Volvo will not debut this until early 2018 but it will include the new XC40 SUV.

Is the Market Ready for Car Subscriptions?

Overall, car subscription services may be a great way to “lease” vehicles. With access to multiple models at any time, the service is sure to attract many. While at the same time I’d love to own a Porsche, I’d also love to get a chance to drive each model. This method could also be used to allow customers to “test” the cars and could lead to purchases. The cars may not be fully loaded or customized to your liking, it’s still a great deal. In the end, the market will let us know if subscription car service is a go… or not.

$4.2 Million Ferrari F12 TRS

The Ferrari F12 TRS, with a value of $4.2 million, is one of Ferrari’s ultra-exclusive Special Projects cars. The Special Projects program by Ferrari provides the most steadfast customers with access to rare specialty vehicles. Ferrari has already decided to limit production to only 7,000 models per year. Although manufacturing is down, Ferrari is offering a high-level of personalization options for their cars. The Ferrari F12 TRS is no exception, and at $4.2 million, you’d better get what you’re expecting.

6.3-Liter V12 with 720 Horsepower & 508 Lb.-Ft. of Torque

The Ferrari F12 TRS sports a 6.3-liter V12 engine producing 729 horsepower and 508 lb.-ft. of torque. This allows the F12 TRS to hit 62 mph in only 3.1 seconds. The motor also allows for a top speed of around 211 mph, plus some. The F12 TRS’s basis is an extension of the F12 Berlinetta. It shares the same powertrain and performance specs as the Berlinetta.

Extreme Open-Top Sports Barchetta

The F12 TRS was developed due to a client’s request for an extreme open-top sports Barchetta. A major initial inspiration for the project is the 1957 Ferrari 250 Testa Rossa. This car is pays homage to the legendary 250 Testa Rossa’s spirit as well as the “TRS” title. Rumors of a KERS-style hybrid system aren’t true as the vehicles basis is the F12 TRS. From exterior to interior, the F12 TRS is a beautiful collector’s car.

Ferrari F12 TRS is a Majestic Vehicle

Overall, the Ferrari F12 TRS is a beast of a machine at a hefty price of $4.2 million USD. Limited in sales, the F12 TRS will rarely be seen by the public’s eyes on the street. Fortunately, for everyone, a video of a F12 TRS at an air field has surfaced on YouTube as seen above on this page. Now, everyone can enjoy the prowess of this majestic vehicle. In the end, the Ferrari F12 TRS is any Ferrari lover’s dream.

BMW on Display at NAIAS 2017

According to BMW, the focus of the North American International Auto Show 2017 was innovation. BMW hoped to showcase a new vision for sustainable and progressive cars. BMW unveiled the BMW 5 Series Sedan and the Concept X2. Also on display were the BMW i3 and i8 electrical vehicles with their new battery technology. Finally, racing fans had a chance to get up close and personal with the BMW M6 GT3 for the very first time.

The New BMW 5 Series Sedan

The main difference between the New BMW 5 Sedan and previous versions is in the wide range of assistance systems BMW has included to help ease the driving experience.

“The BMW 5 Series displays motorway dynamics and elegance in a perfect combination. It is, therefore, the ideal business saloon.” – ADRIAN VAN HOOYDONK, SENIOR VICE PRESIDENT BMW GROUP DESIGN

The 2017 BMW 5 is the first to have iDrive 6.0. The car responds to voice commands that regulate almost every function. With the Optional Gesture Control, you can choose to navigate the car with simple hand movements. You can also control communication and entertainment.

Another system installed on the BMW 5 Series is the Active Lane Keeping Assistant. With the use of camera sensors, the Assistant helps keep your vehicle in the center of the traffic lane. This keeps distracted drivers from drifting, thus reducing accidents.

The BMW 5 Series, while not the fastest car on the market, does an impressive 0 to 60 mph in 4.7 seconds. The car is lightweight and boasts BMW TwinPower Turbo engines. BMW promotes the combination of high-strength steel, magnesium, and aluminum they used to manufacture the car.

The BMW 5 Series Sedan seems to be similar to the previous versions except for new “gadget-like” controls. While cool, the use of gestures to drive your car, or having a computer keep you in the middle of your lane may not be enough to convince buyers that the BMW 5 is worth the sticker price.

The BMW Concept X2

Like the BMW 5 Series Sedan, the company has taken a previous version and changed up a few things in an effort to modernize it. The X2 is basically the sportier version of the X1, with most of the changes being in looks and not function.

BMW is marketing the Concept X2 to drivers who want a sporty, practical SUV type vehicle. They offer the car in a sporty red to make it eye-catching. BMW lengthened the wheelbase and extended the roof line to give the car a leaner, more powerful look.

“The X2 is a “vehicle for active people looking for a combination of enjoyment and practicality.”- Adrian van Hooydonk, senior vice president for BMW Group Design

Under the hood, the Concept X2 has an engine similar to the X1. The four-cylinder twin-turbo engine generates 228 horsepower, which is adequate, though not groundbreaking. Priced in the mid $30k range, the car offers a stylish alternative to a standard SUV.

Sustainable Driving with The BMW i3 and i8

The BMW i-series addresses the need for sustainable transportation. The 2017 BMW i3 boasts an improved battery pack which has 50% more capacity. This enables the i3 to go upwards of 150 miles on one charge. The Range Extender (REx) adds somewhere around 50 miles to that figure. The BMW i3 has 0% emissions and can be charged in less than 3 hours.

The BMW i8 hybrid has a 357 horsepower powertrain, and the car can move amazingly fast. In tests, it went from 0 to 60 mph in just 4.0 seconds. The hybrid i8 gets about 38 mpg. BMW worked hard on the exterior of the i8. The dark silver paint and lines of the car make it seem more futuristic than other BMW models.

For drivers who want an all-electric vehicle, the BMW i3 is a good option. However, if you don’t mind a hybrid, the BMW i8 is sportier, fuel-efficient, and lightning fast. All-in-all it is a more exciting ride.

BMW M6 GT3

To thrill the race car enthusiasts attending the Detroit show, BMW brought their BMW M6 GT3 race car. As described by Top Gear, it is a “big-winged beast of a racecar.” The BMW M6 GT3 claimed the top spot at the 24 Hours of Spa-Francorchamps, Japan’s Super GT Championship and the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship in the USA.

BMW’s premier racing car has a six-speed sequential racing transmission along with state-of-the-art motorsport electronics. Modification to the chassis helped improve the aerodynamics of the vehicle. The M6 GT3 is a modified BMW M6 Coupe, designed specifically for racing.

What BMW Offered Show Attendees

BMW brought out its newest and latest gadgets, such as the Lane Assistant found on the BMW 5 Sedan. The Concept X2 presented viewers with a sportier SUV and BMW also showcased their i-Series “green” cars. Of those presented, the i8 seems the most interesting. The hybrid looks good, drives fast, and offers the benefits of hybrid technology. However, most car enthusiasts will be dreaming of the M6 GT3 sports car instead of BMW’s other NAIAS offerings.

Audi Unveils New Models at NAIAS 2017

Audi started off 2017 with a bang. At the North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) 2017 they showcased three new cars. For the very first time, they unveiled the Q8 concept car to the public. In addition to the Q8, the Audi SQ5 TFSI made its world premiere along with the A5/S5 Cabriolet. These three cars showed the world Audi’s vision for the future.

The Audi Q8 Concept Car

Imagine a car that is not quite SUV nor is it a coupe, and yet it makes you think of both. The Q8 Concept car is a hybrid with the spaciousness of a full-size sports utility vehicle, yet it has the sleek lines of a full-size luxury car.

“The Q8 concept is an Audi in peak form. It demonstrates the strengths of our brand in both technology and design while providing a glimpse at a future full-size, production SUV. With its next-generation display and control solutions, we are enabling customers to experience connectivity in a whole new way.” – Dietmar Voggenreiter, Member of the Board of Management for Sales and Marketing at AUDI AG.

Everything about this car feels futuristic. There are no less than three driving modes. “EV” mode is primarily electric, while a computer controls a “hybrid” mode that combines electric and fuel in the most efficient manner possible. A third mode is the “battery hold” mode. When this is selected, the car saves the available electric energy for a later time.

  • Engine: 3.0 V6 TFSI Plug-In Hybrid
  • 0 to 62 MPH: 5.4 seconds
  • Top Speed: 155mph

Control of the vehicle is handled through touch displays in the Audi virtual cockpit. A heads-up 3-D display changes depending on the number of passengers and inputs from the driver.

The Audi SQ5 TFSI

The SQ5 TFSI made its debut at the Detroit auto show and showed the world a sportier version of the regular Q5. This version has a more aggressive look, in part due to the new bumpers and 20-inch wheels.

The American version has a V6 and an eight-speed automatic transmission. Audi claims it can hit 62 mph in 5.4 seconds. The Audi SQ5 TFSI isn’t a slow vehicle but it is slower than the outgoing SQ5 Plus. Audi plans to sell the gas-powered SQ5 TFSI in both the US and Europe.

While the original SQ5 didn’t have much competition, the new SQ5 TFSI must square off against Mercedes-AMG’s GLC43 and BMW’s X4. Only time will tell which of the three captures the European SUV market in the US.

Audi’s A5/S5 Cabriolet

The new A5 Cabriolet convertible weighs about 88 pounds less than previous versions of the Cabriolet. The reduction in weight is mostly due to the new architecture. Even though the car is lighter, the interior of the car is larger. Drivers and passengers both find that it has more shoulder and legroom.

The Cabriolet does have rear passenger seating which can be lowered to increase trunk space. However, the 13 cubic feet of regular trunk space is adequate for most excursions.

The look of the interior is similar to the Audi A4. The gauge cluster is configurable through the optional Virtual Cockpit. An interesting feature is the microphones they have integrated into the seat belts for holding Bluetooth conversations while the top is down.

A Recap of What Audi Brought to NAIAS 2017

Audi wanted to give its fans a view of their future. The Audi Q8 Concept Car showcased the up and coming features that we should expect to see on future models. The Virtual Cockpit is something Audi seems particularly excited to offer to customers. The ability to configure your gauge display and the futuristic feel of touch pads as well as projected images makes one feel like they are years into the future.

The overall theme of the North American International Auto Show is “sporty and futuristic,” and Audi did not disappoint.

Mercedes-AMG Project One Hypercar: The $2.8 Million Collector’s Car

Mercedes-AMG Project One Hypercar: The $2.8 Million Collector’s Car

Mercedes-AMG Project One Hypercar

At the 2017 Frankfurt International Auto Show, Mercedes-AMG revealed the Project One Hypercar. At $2.8 million MSRP, the Project One is a formula-1 inspired hypercar. After long speculation of a Mercedes hypercar, Mercedes-AMG did not disappoint. With production beginning in 2019, the vehicle will be limited to 275 units which are already sold out. Surprisingly, the Mercedes-AMG Project One Hypercar may not sport the motor system you were expecting.

1.6-Liter Turbocharged V6 & Electric Motor Combination

Unlike the Bugatti Chiron that has 1500 horsepower via a 8.0-liter W16 motor, the Mercedes-AMG Project One will sport a 1.6-liter turbocharged V6 and electric motors. With the 8.0-liter W16, the Chiron can shed a 26 gallon tank of gasoline in 8 minutes flat… phew! Although the Project One has a much smaller motor, it can hit 0-60 mph in only 2.6 seconds and reach a top speed of 217 mph. The V6 motor itself producing around 700 horsepower with a 11,000 rpm limit. The three electric motors produce 500 horsepower themselves, leading to ~1,200 horsepower total.

Mercedes-AMG Project One Electric Motors

The electric motors act in a multitude of ways on the Project One. First, there is one electric motor located at each of the front wheels. The third electric motor is within the engine bay. A fourth electric motor spins the turbocharger so there is never lag when acceleration is necessary. Another benefit to this overall electrical setup is that the plugin hybrid system allows for torque vectoring. On the hybrid drive system alone, the Project One can complete 20 miles silently for those late night cruises.

The Project One was engineered with a lightweight carbon fiber body. Furthermore, Carbon wheels and carbon ceramic brakes complement the body. The front and rear spoilers are active which help with cornering. Although expected with other Mercedes models, automation is not an option on this vehicle. Another difference is that the doors open forward then up rather than directly outwards.

The Project One’s body has adequate intakes and vents to keep the motor cool and breathing well. On the interior, it looks like a F1 car with a passenger seat. The steering wheel has multicolored buttons and dials. On the dash, there are dual 10 inch hi-resolution LCD screens. The rear view mirror system is camera based rather than simply a mirror.

Mercedes-AMG Project One Hypercar: Car Collector’s Dream

Overall, the Mercedes-AMG Project One Hypercar is a brand new addition to the highly collectible cars realm. With a combination of electric and fuel, this car can compete with the best of the best. The top speed may not be as high as some competitors but for a V6 and electricity, it speaks for itself. The carbon fiber body, wheels, and brakes make for an authentic racing appearance. In the end, if you were able to pay $2.8 million for one of 275 units, you are one lucky car collector.

2019 Rolls-Royce Cullinan: Calling Out The Bentley Bentayga

In late 2018, Rolls-Royce expects to introduce their first SUV model into the worldwide market, the 2019 Rolls-Royce Cullinan.

2019 Rolls-Royce Cullinan SUV

Rolls-Royce named the Cullinan after an enormous diamond of 3106.8 karats worth an estimated $400 million U.S. dollars. With this vehicle, Rolls-Royce intends to join the recently booming market of luxury SUVs. As with most Rolls-Royce vehicles, the Cullinan will have a hefty price tag of around $420,000, similar to the Rolls-Royce Phantom. The obvious target audience for a car of this stature is the rich and wealthy. In reality, only a few percent of the world population can afford such an extravagant vehicle.

The 2019 Rolls-Royce Cullinan will be built on a new aluminum spaceframe architecture specifically designed for the vehicle. The Cullinan will sport 4×4 all-wheel drive as well as the typical Rolls-Royce V12 motor. Auto theorists suggest that the Cullinan may use the same engine as the Rolls-Royce Ghost, a 6.6-liter V12 twin-turbo with 563 horsepower and 605 lb.-ft. of torque. On top of this, the Cullinan will be offered in a Plug-In-Hybrid version to enter the electric auto market. In today’s world, providing the hybrid version makes sense as the V12 motor will obviously be a gas guzzler (although preferred).

2019 Rolls-Royce Cullinan Competition

Competition in the luxury SUV market has been very competitive in the last few years. The 2019 Rolls-Royce Cullinan will compete with a handful of other vehicles including the Bentley Bentayga, Lamborghini Urus, Mercedes-AMG G65, Porsche Cayenne Turbo, and Range Rover Supercharged. Out of those vehicles, the biggest competition will be with the Bentley Bentayga. The other SUVs are half the price of the Bentayga and definitely will not be comparable to the Cullinan’s price. Recently, Rolls-Royce punched hard at Bentley with a comment by its CEO.

While revealing the Rolls-Royce Phantom VIII in London, the Rolls-Royce CEO Torsten Müller-Ötvös stated: “We are not using mass-manufactured body shells. That limits what you can do on the design side, and it undermines exclusivity massively. You don’t want a camouflaged Q7 in that segment. You want to have a true Rolls-Royce.”

Rolls-Royce called out Bentley over using the same mass-manufactured frame as the Audi Q7 on the Bentayga. For a better understanding, Volkswagen owns both Audi and Bentley. On top of that, Volkswagen owns Lamborghini and Porsche, two of the Cullinan’s market competition.

2019 Rolls-Royce Cullinan is a Masterpiece

Overall, the 2019 Rolls-Royce Cullinan will be a masterpiece of an SUV. Probably worth over $400k, this vehicle will be a rare sight for people around the world. If assumptions are correct, the Cullinan should hit the market in late 2018 with its eyes on the prize. Although the Rolls-Royce CEO attacked the Bentley Bentayga, there is sure to be competition between the two competitors. Hopefully, the public will be able to see this beautiful vehicle at the 2018 auto shows around the world.
