Rumors Spread on Successor of Agera

Recently, in the auto news industry, rumors are spreading about the successor of the Agera. The name is believed to be from a “reliable source close to Koenigsegg”, according to The Supercar Blog. This name is the Koenigsegg Ragnarok. Unrelating, this may strike a reminder to the Thor: Ragnarok film that hit theatres in 2017 with slightly over $850 million in worldwide revenue. Just a quick reminder, this is the film where Chris Hemsworth plays Thor in protecting against the destruction of the gods and world. Furthermore, the word “Ragnarok” translates to “the Doom of the Gods” in old Norse. During this event, the mythical cycle ends, and the cosmos is destroyed, then recreation takes place. So, with a name like this, the Koenigsegg Ragnarok should rattle the hypercar realm.

An Expectation of Performance Figures

Under the hood, the Koenigsegg Ragnarok will most likely sport the twin-turbo V8 seen in the Agera RS, but even better. The horsepower range will be around 1,400, at least 40 over the Agera RS that could reach almost 278 mph at top speed. Now, prepare yourself to be taken back by the expected performance. Koenigsegg wants the Ragnarok to reach 250 mph in only 14 seconds, leaving rubber the entire way behind. With the combination of a V8, 23 psi boost from the turbo, and a ratio of 8.8:1 instead of 9.5:1, this car could feed 32 psi for an instant 600 horsepower boost. Phew! That’s one hell of a performance. Honestly, hopefully it will happen as it is true insanity for a production vehicle of any type. With this car, Koenigsegg hopes to hold back the Tesla Roadster’s advantages.

Recently, Christian von Koenigsegg, the CEO and founder of Koenigsegg, spoke to Top Gear about the Tesla Roadster. Initially, Koenigsegg didn’t truly believe the performance expectations for the Tesla. But, unfortunately, Elon Musk wasn’t lying when we spoke of the insane acceleration in the Roadster. Now, the Koenigsegg Ragnarok will most likely be Koenigsegg’s attempt to strike back.

“We wondered whether it was possible, and yeah, it’s possible. Then we thought, ‘okay how do we deal with it? This is embarrassing.’ In two days we’d thought of a few things. The simplest way of putting it is like this: it’s combining direct drive with the hybridization we have in a different format with Freevalve engine technology, in a peculiar layout.” – Christian von Koenigsegg, Founder & CEO of Koenigsegg (During Interview with Top Gear)

After refocusing energy from the already planned future, to a new future, Koenigsegg believes to have found a way to do it. Koenigsegg plans to use a combustion engine, versus an electric setup, to compete with the Roadster. This doesn’t make it direct competition, but it is close enough being in the same hypercar class. Their goal is to use direct drive with hybridization. Next, it’ll include Freevalve engine tech in a specific layout. Not being extremely detailed, Koenigsegg teased at this during the interview as seen above. Now, it is somewhat an expectation that the Koenigsegg Ragnarok will be the new frontier.

According to Christian von Koenigsegg, the company is “just scratching the surface”. With the Koenigsegg Ragnarok, the auto industry will rattle from the wrath of power. Although nothing is truly known, the car will display at the 2019 Geneva Motor Show in March of 2019. At this show, the world will see the future of the hypercar realm. If the power figures are true, this is an Earth car fit for Thor, maybe somewhat of what he’d expect in Asgard. In conclusion, the Koenigsegg Ragnarok’s name may, or may not, be correct, but the car will be a beast.

BMW M models will release as electric vehicles at some point in the next decade. The quote above is a statement from Frank van Meel at a press conference to CarAdvice journalists. So, expecting an electrified M2 or M5 may not be a crazy thought. Either way, electric vehicles (EVs) are the way of the future. So, hopping on board is a requirement for most manufacturers at some point.

One of the main reasons that the BMW M model lineup is not electrified is the components themselves. Below, Meel can be seen showing disappointment with electrical components. From his perspective, they are quite heavy which will effect weight and power-to-weight ratios. This will obviously lower the overall performance of the vehicle… but maybe not. BMW should look to Tesla for an understanding of EV technology. Why? Because Tesla has a sedan that can reach 60 mph in under 3 seconds. That is faster than most sports cars, including Ferrari and Lamborghini. So, electrical component weight is a poor reason for not advancing the fleet.

In recent years, BMW has shown high interest in achieving success within the electric vehicle (EV) market. In 2016, BMW announced the plans for the iNext EV vehicle. The BMW iNext EV will be a “new innovation driver, with autonomous driving, digital connectivity, intelligent lightweight design, a totally new interior and ultimately bringing the next generation of electro-mobility to the road” (Quote by BMW CEO Harald Krüger). The BMW iNext EV will probably take after the BMW i Vision Dynamics Concept. Furthermore, the list of features within the iNext EV are sure not to disappoint. At the BMW Annual General Meeting, the CEO presented the initial design for this new tech flagship.

The BMW iNext EV boasts a ton of amazing features. Firstly, the iNext EV will offer a mileage range up to 435 miles. And yes, this is on one charge, not two or three. Secondly, there will be SAE level 3 autonomous driving tech with level 4 arriving within a year or so. This means that eyes on the road and hands on the wheel do not apply. Scary? Maybe. Not really. These features in themselves are a great feat for the BMW engineering team.

By 2025, BMW plans to offer 25 electric vehicles, with 12 being fully electric. This means that BMW will offer mostly hybrids but with almost half being fully electric. This is quite an impressive goal and there will no doubt be competition in this field for the years to come. Recently shown in Beijing, the BMW all-electric X3 may arrive as early as 2020. Later in 2018, BMW will show the iNext EV as a “Vision Vehicle” concept to the world. Production for the iNext EV should begin in Dingolfing, Germany in 2021. In conclusion, BMW is aiming to achieve a full offering of electric vehicles in less than 10 years.

For the 2019 model year, Mercedes-AMG is replacing the E43 with the E53. The 2019 Mercedes-AMG E53 will be available in a cabriolet, coupe, and sedan variant. The cabriolet and coupe were revealed at the Detroit Auto Show (North American International Auto Show 2018). The E43 was a perfect match for someone looking for more than a base E300 and less than the overwhelming E63. Now, the E53 will be the middleman. The E53 has a different engine as well as some slight exterior mods in comparison to the base model. The exterior has two power bulges on the hood as well as a redesigned rear bumper with diffuser.

3.0-Liter Turbocharged Inline-Six with 429 Horsepower

The 2019 Mercedes-AMG E53 sports a 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six engine. This motor produces 429 base horsepower and 384 lb.-ft. of torque. To support the engine, there is a 48-volt mild-hybrid system. This hybrid system produces only 21 horsepower but a whopping 184 lb.-ft. of torque. The purpose of this is to help with fuel consumption and power during usage. Furthermore, there is an electric auxiliary compressor that works with the exhaust-driven turbo to minimize lag.

In combo with the engine, there is a 9-speed AMG transmission. On top of this, there is an AWD system in the 2019 Mercedes-AMG E53. From 0-60 mph, the E53 coupe takes only 4.3 seconds. On the other hand, the cabriolet and sedan take 4.3 seconds, 0.1 seconds longer. The top speed is electronically limited to 130 mph for all three versions.

The 2019 Mercedes-AMG E53 is proof that Mercedes is looking to the future. With more power and better fuel consumption, this car is taking a leap forward. Furthermore, Mercedes-AMG will be offering optional 20” lightweight alloy wheels on the E53. This is on top of the 14.2” brake discs in use for all of the wheels. The MSRP is currently TBD but will most likely be available by the fall or winter. AMG expects to offer the E53 starting end of 2018 in the U.S. In conclusion, the new E53 is a beautiful feat of engineering with sufficient power and luxury.

You are probably aware that from 2006 to 2015, VW based their US sales strategy on selling “clean diesel” vehicles such as the Passat and the Jetta. They claimed that these vehicles rivaled electric-hybrids like the Toyota Prius in both performance and emissions.

Sales records show that as many as 580,000 found their way into the garages of unwary consumers. All of these customers thought they were buying high-performance, EPA-friendly autos.

But they weren’t.

Instead, they were actually purchasing vehicles which spewed 4x the legal limit of noxious fumes allowed by the US Nox Regulations.

So, how did this fraud continue for close to a decade? Who knew and who didn’t?

Actually, the emissions scandal was the work of only a handful of people.

About 40 people, worked together to cover up the results of the failed emissions testing. The fraud went all the way to the top and there is little doubt that the CEO, Winkerton, knew of the issue in 2016. Many feel that he knew about it before then and may have had a hand in its execution.

Once the story broke, vehicle owners began filing civil lawsuits and criminal investigations began. Several executives found themselves facing jail sentences and VW’s CEO was forced to resign. In addition, the company was hit with billions of dollars in fines and settlements.

Unfortunately, the lasting implications for the 642,000 auto workers who had nothing to do with the VW Emissions Scandal are real. VW sales have still not returned to same levels they were before the diesel scandal. Some US auto dealers reported that they had days during the past two years when they didn’t see a single customer in their showrooms.

Yet, finally, this past quarter, VW sales have started to climb.

According to Autodata, it looks as if VW has gained 12% over previous year’s sales. This could mean that the public is willing to forgive and forget now that those who engineered the VW Emissions Scandal have had to pay the piper.

Once you request your car from the BMW subscription service, a concierge from the local dealer delivers the car to you. It comes fully fueled and detailed and you can even have them preset the car to match your preferences.

Once it was time to hit production, the vehicle title became Valkyrie. Valkyrie is a word in relation to Scandinavian mythology. It stands for the beautiful twelve handmaidens of Odin who conducted the slain warriors of their choice from the battlefield of Valhalla.

In a collaboration with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Lamborghini has created a new type of supercar. The Lamborghini Terzo Millennio Concept supercar is a prototype that hints towards the future of the automotive industry. For your knowledge, Terzo Millennio stands for “Third Millennium” in Italian. The Terzo Millennio was first unveiled at the EmTech conference in Cambridge, MA. This prototype is a display of the first complete year of a partnership between Lamborghini and MIT that will span a total of three years.

As this vehicle is a prototype, the final stage of development is still a far distance away. This means that a lot of the features are still works in-progress. Lamborghini hopes to power the Terzo Millennio with in-wheel electric motors. Furthermore, the car will have supercapacitors built into the carbon fiber panels to help power the vehicle. Capacitors are currently used in hybrid vehicles to restart a motor, but not to fully operate a vehicle. Basically, the car itself will be a battery. The reason for this strategy is that current lithium-ion batteries have slower performance as well as lose recharge capacity over time.

On the exterior, the Lamborghini Terzo Millennio Concept Supercar has the trademark Lamborghini “Y” taillights. On the front, the windshield spans from the top of the car all the way down to what seems the pedal level. The overall Terzo Millennio is extremely low to the ground, as if it were part of it. Lamborghini also has plans to bring the exterior of vehicles to the future with the Terzo Millennio. The exterior of the vehicle will detect wear and tear. On top of this, there will be micro-channels within the vehicle’s carbon fiber body that will contain “healing chemistries”. These chemicals will automatically repair small cracks, basically making it a self-healing vehicle.

A Vision of the Future of the Automotive Industry


Overall, the Lamborghini Terzo Millennio Concept Supercar is vision of the future. From it’s futuristic outlook on power to the self-healing capabilities, this car will be a true feat of engineering. There are currently no plans to bring this car to market, at least for now. The technology that will develop during this partnership with MIT will most likely be visible in future models. It is also expected that these advancements will be used by Lamborghini’s parent company, Volkswagen. Porsche Mission E to be Sold in 2019

In 2019, Porsche will begin selling the all-new Mission E sedan. The Porsche Mission E is a fully electric 4-seater sport sedan. The purpose of this vehicle is to compete in the electric vehicle industry which is the future of transportation. As expected, the Mission E has its eyes set on Tesla. On release, the Porsche Mission E will have a MSRP of about $85,000.

“Our core area of expertise lies in complex, efficient, and high-performance power trains – just look at the 918 Spyder or 919 Hybrid”, stated Stefan Weckbach, the Mission E project head.

Two Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motors (PSMs)

The Porsche Mission E sedan will sport two permanent magnet synchronous motors (PSMs). These were used in the Porsche 919 Hybrid that won Le Mans. This system allows for energy recovery while braking that can be used to continue propulsion. One of these motors powers the front axle while the other powers the rear. With these motors, the Mission E can hit 60 mph in only 3.5 seconds. Surprisingly, the Mission E can hit 124 mph in less than 12 seconds – phew. These motors produce a combined 600+ horsepower.

800 Volt Charging System

In the Porsche Mission E, the voltage is double the standard charging value at 800 volts. This allows for shorter charging times and decreases the overall weight of the vehicle. With a lithium-ion battery, the Mission E can drive more than 300 miles on a single charge. To get another 250 miles, simply recharge for 15 minutes – enough time to grab coffee, or a quick meal. With an 800 volt charging system, the Mission E can still be recharged at a typical 400 volt recharging station.

Electric Vehicles are the Future


Overall, the Porsche Mission E is expected to stir up the electric vehicle market. As Tesla currently holds reign in this sub-industry, Porsche and other brands will be making their appearances in the next few years. From Audi to Mercedes-Benz to Porsche, each brand understands the need for a motion towards a fully electric future. Without an exhaust, the cars may not sound the same but they sure are just as fact – if not faster. In the end, auto enthusiasts will probably be happy to take the Mission E for a ride, or two.
