BMW Sets High Goal for EV Models

In recent years, BMW has shown high interest in achieving success within the electric vehicle (EV) market. In 2016, BMW announced the plans for the iNext EV vehicle. The BMW iNext EV will be a “new innovation driver, with autonomous driving, digital connectivity, intelligent lightweight design, a totally new interior and ultimately bringing the next generation of electro-mobility to the road” (Quote by BMW CEO Harald Krüger). The BMW iNext EV will probably take after the BMW i Vision Dynamics Concept. Furthermore, the list of features within the iNext EV are sure not to disappoint. At the BMW Annual General Meeting, the CEO presented the initial design for this new tech flagship.

The BMW iNext EV boasts a ton of amazing features. Firstly, the iNext EV will offer a mileage range up to 435 miles. And yes, this is on one charge, not two or three. Secondly, there will be SAE level 3 autonomous driving tech with level 4 arriving within a year or so. This means that eyes on the road and hands on the wheel do not apply. Scary? Maybe. Not really. These features in themselves are a great feat for the BMW engineering team.

By 2025, BMW plans to offer 25 electric vehicles, with 12 being fully electric. This means that BMW will offer mostly hybrids but with almost half being fully electric. This is quite an impressive goal and there will no doubt be competition in this field for the years to come. Recently shown in Beijing, the BMW all-electric X3 may arrive as early as 2020. Later in 2018, BMW will show the iNext EV as a “Vision Vehicle” concept to the world. Production for the iNext EV should begin in Dingolfing, Germany in 2021. In conclusion, BMW is aiming to achieve a full offering of electric vehicles in less than 10 years.

For the 2019 model year, Mercedes-AMG is replacing the E43 with the E53. The 2019 Mercedes-AMG E53 will be available in a cabriolet, coupe, and sedan variant. The cabriolet and coupe were revealed at the Detroit Auto Show (North American International Auto Show 2018). The E43 was a perfect match for someone looking for more than a base E300 and less than the overwhelming E63. Now, the E53 will be the middleman. The E53 has a different engine as well as some slight exterior mods in comparison to the base model. The exterior has two power bulges on the hood as well as a redesigned rear bumper with diffuser.

3.0-Liter Turbocharged Inline-Six with 429 Horsepower

The 2019 Mercedes-AMG E53 sports a 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six engine. This motor produces 429 base horsepower and 384 lb.-ft. of torque. To support the engine, there is a 48-volt mild-hybrid system. This hybrid system produces only 21 horsepower but a whopping 184 lb.-ft. of torque. The purpose of this is to help with fuel consumption and power during usage. Furthermore, there is an electric auxiliary compressor that works with the exhaust-driven turbo to minimize lag.

In combo with the engine, there is a 9-speed AMG transmission. On top of this, there is an AWD system in the 2019 Mercedes-AMG E53. From 0-60 mph, the E53 coupe takes only 4.3 seconds. On the other hand, the cabriolet and sedan take 4.3 seconds, 0.1 seconds longer. The top speed is electronically limited to 130 mph for all three versions.

The 2019 Mercedes-AMG E53 is proof that Mercedes is looking to the future. With more power and better fuel consumption, this car is taking a leap forward. Furthermore, Mercedes-AMG will be offering optional 20” lightweight alloy wheels on the E53. This is on top of the 14.2” brake discs in use for all of the wheels. The MSRP is currently TBD but will most likely be available by the fall or winter. AMG expects to offer the E53 starting end of 2018 in the U.S. In conclusion, the new E53 is a beautiful feat of engineering with sufficient power and luxury.

For the 642,000 people working for Volkswagen, the actions of a few have altered their lives irrevocably.

You are probably aware that from 2006 to 2015, VW based their US sales strategy on selling “clean diesel” vehicles such as the Passat and the Jetta. They claimed that these vehicles rivaled electric-hybrids like the Toyota Prius in both performance and emissions.

Sales records show that as many as 580,000 found their way into the garages of unwary consumers. All of these customers thought they were buying high-performance, EPA-friendly autos.

But they weren’t.

Instead, they were actually purchasing vehicles which spewed 4x the legal limit of noxious fumes allowed by the US Nox Regulations.

So, how did this fraud continue for close to a decade? Who knew and who didn’t?

Actually, the emissions scandal was the work of only a handful of people.

About 40 people, worked together to cover up the results of the failed emissions testing. The fraud went all the way to the top and there is little doubt that the CEO, Winkerton, knew of the issue in 2016. Many feel that he knew about it before then and may have had a hand in its execution.

Once the story broke, vehicle owners began filing civil lawsuits and criminal investigations began. Several executives found themselves facing jail sentences and VW’s CEO was forced to resign. In addition, the company was hit with billions of dollars in fines and settlements.

Unfortunately, the lasting implications for the 642,000 auto workers who had nothing to do with the VW Emissions Scandal are real. VW sales have still not returned to same levels they were before the diesel scandal. Some US auto dealers reported that they had days during the past two years when they didn’t see a single customer in their showrooms.

Yet, finally, this past quarter, VW sales have started to climb.

According to Autodata, it looks as if VW has gained 12% over previous year’s sales. This could mean that the public is willing to forgive and forget now that those who engineered the VW Emissions Scandal have had to pay the piper.

Just this week, BMW began testing their new BMW vehicle subscription service in Nashville, Tennessee. Similar to the Cadillac and Volvo subscription services, drivers can request vehicles through a mobile app and if desired, can even drive a different car every day of the month.

Once you request your car from the BMW subscription service, a concierge from the local dealer delivers the car to you. It comes fully fueled and detailed and you can even have them preset the car to match your preferences.

As of now, the BMW vehicle subscription service is still in the testing phase. Nashville should allow them to learn and grow the program to better meet the needs of their customers before launching it across the country.

The Aston Martin Valkyrie is in production at the Gaydon, Warwickshire, England facility. Here, Aston will produce 150 units through 2018. Originally, this vehicle was called the Nebula which is an acronym for Newey, Red Bull, and Aston Martin. Although, the final code name was AM-RB 001 which stands for Aston Martin-Red Bull 001. Once it was time to hit production, the vehicle title became Valkyrie. Valkyrie is a word in relation to Scandinavian mythology. It stands for the beautiful twelve handmaidens of Odin who conducted the slain warriors of their choice from the battlefield of Valhalla.

The Aston Martin Valkyrie AMR Pro is a track-version Valkyrie with only 25 models total in production which are sold. The engine on the AMR Pro will have a lot more power due to battery and engine tunings. The battery power will remain the same but the functionality will be in a racing sense. As per the engine, it will have a better tune to produce more power all-around.

Overall, the Aston Martin Valkyrie is quite an amazing hypercar. With over 1,000 horsepower and a 1:1 power-to-weight-ratio, this car will be major competition for all other hypercars of the generation. The MSRP of the Valkyrie is a hefty $3,200,000. In a collaboration with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Lamborghini has created a new type of supercar. The Lamborghini Terzo Millennio Concept supercar is a prototype that hints towards the future of the automotive industry. For your knowledge, Terzo Millennio stands for “Third Millennium” in Italian. The Terzo Millennio was first unveiled at the EmTech conference in Cambridge, MA. This prototype is a display of the first complete year of a partnership between Lamborghini and MIT that will span a total of three years.

As this vehicle is a prototype, the final stage of development is still a far distance away. This means that a lot of the features are still works in-progress. Lamborghini hopes to power the Terzo Millennio with in-wheel electric motors. Furthermore, the car will have supercapacitors built into the carbon fiber panels to help power the vehicle. Capacitors are currently used in hybrid vehicles to restart a motor, but not to fully operate a vehicle. Basically, the car itself will be a battery. The reason for this strategy is that current lithium-ion batteries have slower performance as well as lose recharge capacity over time.

On the exterior, the Lamborghini Terzo Millennio Concept Supercar has the trademark Lamborghini “Y” taillights. On the front, the windshield spans from the top of the car all the way down to what seems the pedal level. The overall Terzo Millennio is extremely low to the ground, as if it were part of it. Lamborghini also has plans to bring the exterior of vehicles to the future with the Terzo Millennio. The exterior of the vehicle will detect wear and tear. On top of this, there will be micro-channels within the vehicle’s carbon fiber body that will contain “healing chemistries”. These chemicals will automatically repair small cracks, basically making it a self-healing vehicle.

A Vision of the Future of the Automotive Industry

Overall, the Lamborghini Terzo Millennio Concept Supercar is vision of the future. From it’s futuristic outlook on power to the self-healing capabilities, this car will be a true feat of engineering. There are currently no plans to bring this car to market, at least for now. The technology that will develop during this partnership with MIT will most likely be visible in future models. It is also expected that these advancements will be used by Lamborghini’s parent company, Volkswagen. In conclusion, the Lamborghini Terzo Millennio Concept Supercar is a dream of what is to be the next generation vehicle.

Porsche Mission E to be Sold in 2019

In 2019, Porsche will begin selling the all-new Mission E sedan. The Porsche Mission E is a fully electric 4-seater sport sedan. The purpose of this vehicle is to compete in the electric vehicle industry which is the future of transportation. As expected, the Mission E has its eyes set on Tesla. On release, the Porsche Mission E will have a MSRP of about $85,000.

“Our core area of expertise lies in complex, efficient, and high-performance power trains – just look at the 918 Spyder or 919 Hybrid”, stated Stefan Weckbach, the Mission E project head.

Two Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motors (PSMs)

The Porsche Mission E sedan will sport two permanent magnet synchronous motors (PSMs). These were used in the Porsche 919 Hybrid that won Le Mans. This system allows for energy recovery while braking that can be used to continue propulsion. One of these motors powers the front axle while the other powers the rear. With these motors, the Mission E can hit 60 mph in only 3.5 seconds. Surprisingly, the Mission E can hit 124 mph in less than 12 seconds – phew. These motors produce a combined 600+ horsepower.

800 Volt Charging System

In the Porsche Mission E, the voltage is double the standard charging value at 800 volts. This allows for shorter charging times and decreases the overall weight of the vehicle. With a lithium-ion battery, the Mission E can drive more than 300 miles on a single charge. To get another 250 miles, simply recharge for 15 minutes – enough time to grab coffee, or a quick meal. With an 800 volt charging system, the Mission E can still be recharged at a typical 400 volt recharging station.

Electric Vehicles are the Future

Overall, the Porsche Mission E is expected to stir up the electric vehicle market. As Tesla currently holds reign in this sub-industry, Porsche and other brands will be making their appearances in the next few years. From Audi to Mercedes-Benz to Porsche, each brand understands the need for a motion towards a fully electric future. Without an exhaust, the cars may not sound the same but they sure are just as fact – if not faster. In the end, auto enthusiasts will probably be happy to take the Mission E for a ride, or two.

In 2017, Porsche is bringing a brand-new car sales concept to market. Starting in the Atlanta area, Porsche will run a new pilot program that offers car subscription services called Porsche Passport. For $2,000 minimum per month, a Porsche subscriber will have access to any Porsche model they desire, whenever they desire it. Basically, with the subscription service, a subscriber will be able to load an application and request a different model whenever they please. This is an interesting take on profitability and I think this may be the future of auto leases.

Starts November 2017 in Atlanta, Georgia

Starting next month, in November 2017, Porsche will offer the subscription service in Atlanta. With a base price of $2,000 per month, this includes sports cars and SUVs. Porsche refers to this as “white-glove” service and plans to provide a flexible schedule to all subscribers. Porsche teamed up with Clutch Technologies, LLC to bring this concept to life. Porsche’s Strategy 2025 is a reason that this concept is being rolled out. Their plan is to appeal more to customers’ desire and to provide the experience of each Porsche sports car.

Starts at $2,000 per Month

For $2,000 per month, the driver will have access to models including the Boxter, Cayman, and 6 other models. At $3,000 per month, the plan increases the number of cars to 22 models including a Cayenne E-Hybrid. The subscription includes detailing, insurance maintenance, registration, and vehicle tax. There is also a $500 activation fee as well as a credit check for people to access the Porsche Passport app. The application will be placed on Android and iOS.

Audi on Demand & Care by Volvo

In San Francisco, Audi runs “Audi on Demand” which is somewhat of a concierge rental service. There is also a plan by Volvo for “Care by Volvo” which is another subscription service. Volvo will not debut this until early 2018 but it will include the new XC40 SUV.

Is the Market Ready for Car Subscriptions?

Overall, car subscription services may be a great way to “lease” vehicles. With access to multiple models at any time, the service is sure to attract many. While at the same time I’d love to own a Porsche, I’d also love to get a chance to drive each model. This method could also be used to allow customers to “test” the cars and could lead to purchases. The cars may not be fully loaded or customized to your liking, it’s still a great deal. In the end, the market will let us know if subscription car service is a go… or not.

Although manufacturing is down, Ferrari is offering a high-level of personalization options for their cars. The Ferrari F12 TRS is no exception, and at $4.2 million, you’d better get what you’re expecting.

The Ferrari F12 TRS sports a 6.3-liter V12 engine producing 729 horsepower and 508 lb.-ft. of torque. This allows the F12 TRS to hit 62 mph in only 3.1 seconds. The motor also allows for a top speed of around 211 mph, plus some. The F12 TRS’s basis is an extension of the F12 Berlinetta. It shares the same powertrain and performance specs as the Berlinetta.

The F12 TRS was developed due to a client’s request for an extreme open-top sports Barchetta. A major initial inspiration for the project is the 1957 Ferrari 250 Testa Rossa. This car is pays homage to the legendary 250 Testa Rossa’s spirit as well as the “TRS” title. Rumors of a KERS-style hybrid system aren’t true as the vehicles basis is the F12 TRS. From exterior to interior, the F12 TRS is a beautiful collector’s car.

Overall, the Ferrari F12 TRS is a beast of a machine at a hefty price of $4.2 million USD. Limited in sales, the F12 TRS will rarely be seen by the public’s eyes on the street. In the end, the Ferrari F12 TRS is any Ferrari lover’s dream.

According to BMW, the focus of the North American International Auto Show 2017 was innovation. BMW hoped to showcase a new vision for sustainable and progressive cars. BMW unveiled the BMW 5 Series Sedan and the Concept X2. Also on display were the BMW i3 and i8 electrical vehicles with their new battery technology. Finally, racing fans had a chance to get up close and personal with the BMW M6 GT3 for the very first time.

The 2017 BMW 5 is the first to have iDrive 6.0. The car responds to voice commands that regulate almost every function. With the Optional Gesture Control, you can choose to navigate the car with simple hand movements. You can also control communication and entertainment.

Another system installed on the BMW 5 Series is the Active Lane Keeping Assistant. With the use of camera sensors, the Assistant helps keep your vehicle in the center of the traffic lane. This keeps distracted drivers from drifting, thus reducing accidents.

The BMW 5 Series, while not the fastest car on the market, does an impressive 0 to 60 mph in 4.7 seconds. The car is lightweight and boasts BMW TwinPower Turbo engines. BMW promotes the combination of high-strength steel, magnesium, and aluminum they used to manufacture the car.

The BMW 5 Series Sedan seems to be similar to the previous versions except for new “gadget-like” controls. While cool, the use of gestures to drive your car, or having a computer keep you in the middle of your lane may not be enough to convince buyers that the BMW 5 is worth the sticker price.

The BMW Concept X2

Like the BMW 5 Series Sedan, the company has taken a previous version and changed up a few things in an effort to modernize it. The X2 is basically the sportier version of the X1, with most of the changes being in looks and not function.

BMW is marketing the Concept X2 to drivers who want a sporty, practical SUV type vehicle. They offer the car in a sporty red to make it eye-catching. BMW lengthened the wheelbase and extended the roof line to give the car a leaner, more powerful look.

Under the hood, the Concept X2 has an engine similar to the X1. The four-cylinder twin-turbo engine generates 228 horsepower, which is adequate, though not groundbreaking. Priced in the mid $30k range, the car offers a stylish alternative to a standard SUV.

Sustainable Driving with The BMW i3 and i8

The BMW i-series addresses the need for sustainable transportation. The 2017 BMW i3 boasts an improved battery pack which has 50% more capacity. This enables the i3 to go upwards of 150 miles on one charge. The Range Extender (REx) adds somewhere around 50 miles to that figure. The BMW i3 has 0% emissions and can be charged in less than 3 hours.

The BMW i8 hybrid has a 357 horsepower powertrain, and the car can move amazingly fast. In tests, it went from 0 to 60 mph in just 4.0 seconds. The hybrid i8 gets about 38 mpg. BMW worked hard on the exterior of the i8. The dark silver paint and lines of the car make it seem more futuristic than other BMW models.

For drivers who want an all-electric vehicle, the BMW i3 is a good option. However, if you don’t mind a hybrid, the BMW i8 is sportier, fuel-efficient, and lightning fast. All-in-all it is a more exciting ride.


To thrill the race car enthusiasts attending the Detroit show, BMW brought their BMW M6 GT3 race car. As described by Top Gear, it is a “big-winged beast of a racecar.” The BMW M6 GT3 claimed the top spot at the 24 Hours of Spa-Francorchamps, Japan’s Super GT Championship and the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship in the USA.

BMW’s premier racing car has a six-speed sequential racing transmission along with state-of-the-art motorsport electronics. Modification to the chassis helped improve the aerodynamics of the vehicle. The M6 GT3 is a modified BMW M6 Coupe, designed specifically for racing.

What BMW Offered Show Attendees

BMW brought out its newest and latest gadgets, such as the Lane Assistant found on the BMW 5 Sedan. The Concept X2 presented viewers with a sportier SUV and BMW also showcased their i-Series “green” cars. Of those presented, the i8 seems the most interesting. The hybrid looks good, drives fast, and offers the benefits of hybrid technology. However, most car enthusiasts will be dreaming of the M6 GT3 sports car instead of BMW’s other NAIAS offerings.
