The Porsche 918 Spyder is a stunning feat of electrical engineering. Although it is now over 3 years after production, this car still reverberates with fans worldwide. From October 2013 to May 2015, the 918 Spyder was produced at Stuttgart, Zuffenhausen, Germany. There is only 918 units of the 918 Spyder… surprising, right? No… probably not. Either way, that number is no longer exact due to the 918s that were considered a total loss in accidents. Furthermore, the designer for the 918 Coupe and Spyder is Michael Mauer. Thanks to him, Porsche fans can melt in awe as the 918 accelerates to 218 MPH.

The Porsche 918 Spyder sports a 4.6-liter naturally aspirated V8 engine. Furthermore, there are two electric motors on the front and rear axles. The V8 itself produces 608 horsepower and 389 lb.-ft. of torque. Next, the electric motors add 279 horsepower and 555 lb.-ft. of torque. So, overall, this vehicle produces a whopping 887 horsepower and 944 lb.-ft. of torque… phew! Not surprisingly, this allows the 918 Spyder to reach high speeds quickly:

  • 0 to 124 MPH: 7.2 Seconds

As shown above, the Porsche 918 Spyder is a beast of a machine. This engine setup works in combo with a 7-speed PDF dual-clutch transmission. Furthermore, there is a 6.8 kWh liquid-cooled lithium-ion battery with a 420-mile range built-in. All this tech allows the driver in the video to hit amazing speed. The German Autobahn has sections in which there is no speed limit, allowing cars like this to reach their full potential. While most auto manufacturers readily display concept vehicles to the world, Land Rover is reluctant to do so. The main reasoning behind this is due to the fact that a Chinese auto manufacturer may attempt to clone their vehicles. This disrupts Land Rover’s market within China, an obviously large opportunity for sales. An example of a Chinese copycat is the LandWind X7. It is a complete rip-off of the Range Rover Evoque at a third of the price. The issue with this comes down to failure to oblige copyright law protections in China.

Similar Design & Specifications

Unfortunately for Land Rover, Landwind, the knock-off Chinese manufacturer, mimiced the Evoque without backlash. The Landwind X7 has been produced since August 2015 when it was considered a copy of the Evoque. Obviously, Jaguar Land Rover unsuccessfully prevented the Landwind from entering the market. The Landwind X7 has a 2.0-liter Mitsubishi engine with an 8-speed transmission. At the same time, the Range Rover Evoque has a 2.0-liter engine with a 9-speed transmission. Based on these specifications, the only difference between the Evoque and X7 is an extra gear.

On the price end, the Range Rover Evoque starts at a MSRP of $41,475. On the other hand, the Landwind X7 starts at an estimated $16,253 (converted from 14,000 Euros). This is a substantial price decrease, at about 60% less. That discount comes with a copycat design and less prestige. But, if you’re unable to afford the true Evoque in China, you can settle for the knockoff version… regretfully.

Overall, the Landwind X7 is the true representation of stealing another company’s design. Unfortunately for Jaguar Land Rover, the Chinese government sided with the Chinese auto manufacturer – no surprise. It’s truly a shame that companies have to worry about design mimicking in today’s day and age. Fortunately, for Range Rover, Landwind vehicles are low in quality. The saddest part is that Landwind couldn’t engineer their own design. In the end, the Landwind X7 will never be a Range Rover Evoque.

The 2017 Audi RS3 Quattro can be considered a fantastic beast (Get it? Yes, I did pull that right there). At a starting MSRP of $54,500, the RS3 is a leap forward in the hot hatch and small sedan markets. With a turbocharged 2.5-liter 5-cylinder engine, the RS4 pushes 400 horsepower and 354 lb.-ft. of torque. Due to this, the 2017 Audi RS3 can do 0-60 in 3.9 seconds. At this speed, the RS3 can compete with some high end sports cars including the Maserati GranTurismo MC Stradale. As usual, the RS3 is a heavy vehicle at 3,593 lbs or roughly 1.8 tons.

In reality, the 2017 Audi RS3 Quattro can’t compete with most high end sports cars such as the Ferrari 488 GTB. On the other hand, it can compete with the more sluggish models on the road. The more “sluggish” sports cars include the Bentley Continental GT and Maserati GranTurismo MC Stradale. With a tune and stage 2 or 3 level mods, the RS3 could unleash 100+ horsepower to truly let the motor put forward its true potential. Usually, Audi restricts the motor to a more durable, efficient, and friendly power range. This means that each supercharged or turbocharged car has the potential to unlock roughly 50-100 horsepower.

Overall, the 2017 Audi RS3 Quattro is a small beast of a sports car. With an odd 5-cylinder engine, the car competes with the slower end of the sports car realm. For less than half the price, the RS3 is a more affordable vehicle that allows the driver to hit 60 in under 4 seconds.
